I've build me a super super fast Windows xp 32bit system / dual boot with Windows 7 64 bit.

Gigabyte Z97
16gb crucial 1600mhz CL8 2x8gb
X-fi titanium pci-e
Asus strix GTX 980ti 6gb
Samsung 500gb ssd

I can't think of anything faster that is compatible with xp without any modding (besides the inf for the 980ti)

I love this system as it is really fast and smooth.

BUT, how low can such a system go clockwise? Because some really old win9x games still work well in xp but are WAY to fast now (toca2 for example).

And with the cpu at the slowest, should i underclock the gpu too or will it adjust itself because of the slow cpu?

Thanx!

Why do you think lowering cpu speed will solve your problem ? It might be gpu , driver issue. Anyway you can just lower multiplier in BIOS obviously.

DOS: 166mmx/16mb/Y719/S3virge
DOS/95: PII333/128mb/AWE64/TNT2M64
Win98: P3_900/256mb/SB live/3dfx V3
Win Me: Athlon 1700+/512mb/Audigy2/Geforce 3Ti200
Win XP: E8600/4096mb/SB X-fi/HD6850

Lowest in bios is 800mhz, but maybe others have gotten it lower somehow?

Have you tried to use Intel Extreme Tuning utility? (XTU) It probably won't run on XP, and maybe not 7, but if it does, it should show you which multipliers the cpu supports?

Please use the "quote" option if asking questions to what I write - it will really up the chances of me noticing 😀

Gigabyte Z68 + Core i5-3550 does not go that low in BIOS. Lowest Multiplier option is 16.0x. Base clock can be set to 80 instead of default 100, giving either 1280MHz or 1600MHz. In addition some Cores and HyperThreading can be toggled.
I hoped for this system to be Windows XP friendly, which it it. But of course it has troubles with DOS and early Windows 9x software. Should not expect such a 2011 system to make socket 3/7/Slot-1 systems obsolete in that regard.
