Hello, and welcome to the forum.

Here's the latest BIOS I could find for your laptop. It's indeed v6.0a.

On Toshiba Europe's website you can find the brochure and a technical specifications PDF:

Standard 16 MB EDO RAM,
expandable to 144 MB
256 KB 2nd level cache

I have 64MB of RAM now. What number of memory slots have this Toshiba Satellite 230CX, only in total 1?
I want the 144MB upgrade, what options I have? What type and connector is?

http://web.archive.org/web/20040501171735/htt … _230_tech-e.doc

Maximum memory expansion
(EDO RAM) 144 MB
60 nanoseconds 64-bit

Memory technology Technology 3.3-volt
No. of memory expansion slots 1
Expansion module sizes 8, 16, 32, 48 and 128 MB

Please, what is the HDD maximun capacity for this model of Toshiba? I don't find this information.
And the type of HDD and connector? maximun RPM?

I remenber that are IDE to Compact Flash adapters, MicroSD, etc...is possible a SSD or flash memory for this laptop?...something at the same speed of even more than the original HDD.

I'm not familiar with that model, but according to the brochure, the laptop comes with 16MB EDO RAM on-board.

So there could be one (16+128) or two (16+64+64) memory slots on the bottom of the laptop.

64MB of RAM is a lot for a Pentium MMX cpu. You can run Windows 95 or even Win98SE flawlessly.
Unless you plan to load Linux or other system, I don't think it's convenient to increase the RAM.

The HDD is usually a 2.5 inch, 44-pin IDE drive.
According to the bruchure, max size apparently is around 2GB. Based on my experience with these old laptops, that's usually the case. It's a BIOS limitation.

Your computer should have a 1.4GB hard disk, which is about enough for Win9x usage.

If you don't have an HDD, get a 44-pin to Compact Flash adapter and a ≤2GB Compact Flash card.

@tauro and for all the users:
OK, I need one EDO RAM 128MB (Memory technology Technology 3.3-volt/No. of memory expansion slots 1/Maximum memory expansion
(EDO RAM) 144 MB 60 nanoseconds 64-bit/256 KB 2nd level cache)
(16+128)
Sure that I need only one memory expansion 128MB EDO RAM? For upgrade it to maximum perfomance.
Help, now I have 64MB in total, I see it in Win System Info.Sure this Toshiba Satellite 230CX only have one memory expansion slot? 48 MB module is that I have now in the memory expansion slot? (64-16=48)
Sure all these models Toshiba Satellite 230CX have 16MB integrated from factory?

BUT, please say me what exact connector name is this RAM? put here url of buy in AliExpress/eBay if you can.

Understood, the maximum capacity and model of HDD connector is 2GB of HDD 2.5 inch, 44-pin IDE.
Any MicroSD 2GB with adapter compatible for this model? Works very well than 2GB Compact Flash with adapter?
Exists any SSD 2GB compatible?
Is the same perfomance of the HDD these adaptors?

And wich is the maxium HDD RPM created for this interface connector 2.5" IDE, 44 PIN?
And the original HDD for this Toshiba, what RPM have?

I heard that MicroSD2IDE adapters don't work very well, data corruption problems.Only Compact Flash to IDE go perfectly.
Is true this rumour?

Sorry, I'm not sure. But it probably is a 72-pin EDO RAM SODIMM memory module.

All CF to IDE adapters are practically the same, since they are just a physical adapter. I can't speak about other storage solutions.

You'll be limited by the BIOS as to what is the max hard disk size your computer is going to tolerate. I wouldn't go with over 2GB.

I'd stick to a CF to IDE adapter since they are much more compatible, and since you're using an ancient computer, you won't notice a difference if you are using an HDD, a CF, or whatever other storage media.

Now here's some free advice. You don't really need more than 64MB on a Windows 98SE system. Even 32MB is enough in most cases. You won't have any use for more RAM, especially with a Pentium MMX CPU. DOS and Windows games from the 90's don't need more than 32MB, and that's a stretch for your CPU since you'd need a Pentium II or III for a smooth experience with late 90's games.

So you only need a simple CF to IDE adapter and a 2GB Compact Flash card and you're ready to enjoy the most out of that classic laptop!

Have fun

Anyone help me for this? The Toshiba Satellite 230CX maximum RAM is 144 MB? Sure that I have 16MB integrated in the motherboard?
Only have 1 memory expansion slot and for the maximum upgrade, I need one 128 MB 72-pin EDO RAM SODIMM , this is true?

Sure is better a CF2IDE adapter than a MicroSD2IDE adapter?.Also, I heard that MicroSD2IDE cause data corruption problems and the CF2IDE is better, is correct this info? Is much more compatible the CF2IDE? For this laptop from 1997 is compatible the MicroSD2IDE adapter and works great?

Thanks to all the menbers and greetings, @tauro

Hi there I can help. I've been converting some Toshiba documentation and finally found some that include the 230 series that may have been europe specific? So here's the full spec document and option parts for the Satellite 230CX

The Satellite 230CX does have 16MB integrated and it can go up to 144MB - but you have to look for Toshiba specific memory modules, here are the part codes:
PA Number Article
PA2038U - 8 MB memory kit
PA2039U - 16 MB memory kit
PA2040U - 32 MB memory kit
PA2041U - 48 MB memory kit
PA2042U - 128 MB memory kit

They should look like either regular size 144-pin EDO SODIMM modules or because Toshiba just made their own standards back then - you would find that it's a regular width / pins 144-pin SODIMM but twice as long or tall, which then screws down in the 230CX memory bay under the palmrest.

For storage, my preference is usually Compact Flash, but getting it to fit in the HDD bay could be really tough, so make sure to get a CF to IDE adapter that has a full 2.5" drive shell. The Transcend 133X cards usually work really well in my experience.
Or you could look at MSATA / M.2 to IDE adapters which can also be had with shells - you'd need to stick to 16GB or less MSATA/M.2 SSDs though since I think the storage on the 230CX tops out at 8GB possibly?
