So just given this sp97-v with 64mb ram and k6 300 cpu. It works...? ?? I can't a floppy drive to work. The serial port seems to be flaky and mouse doesn't always work. I started looking at the board and found a burnt spot by the usb header which affects traces to the winbond IO chip, which controls usb, serial, and floppy and probably others. Curious to see if there is a way to find out what components were there and if it may be repairable. Looking at pics of good boards it looks like atleast one surface mount resistor is melted away and of course the traces at that spot may not be recoverable. Just thought I would see if anyone had some thoughts.

L4 got burned, If I had to guess a ferrite bead feeding power for USB. Someone plugged wrong dongle and shorted +5V. That could be ignored, but there is a thin track going between L4 to the pinout header and all that charred PCB might be conducting to it now.

Clean it, take good picture of whats left.

Sometimes the gods will save you from yourself - in 2001 I bought a USB cable for my Asus P55T2P4, which had the soon to be standard nine pin USB header on the motherboard. The cable adapter I bought had two five pin plugs, and no instructions, so I plugged it in and turned it on but it wouldn't power on? The AT PSU I had saved me from myself by detecting a ground fault and not powering on. If not for that, my motherboard would have suffered a similar fate.

And here is an example of why this is a great forum.

Thanks I am going to clean it up and I did find pics of other boards on Google and ya looks like 1 inductor gone for sure and 1 cap too.
I didn't really think about the carbon conducting. I don't even have the usb connector for the board I honestly think some one dropped something in there and powered it up. Either way I'll clean it then maybe try it again. I could careless if the usb worked but maybe if that is still shorting and being connected to the winbond IO controller as is the floppy, maybe the floppy will read proper after.

Well I'll I'm impressed. I cleaned up the burnt spot and it's bad. Even accidentally broke a small trace that was still hanging out in the burnt board. I just tried it out and I know have a functional floppy drive. As well as when win 98 se booted it found a printer port. And also now my mouse works when a floppy drive or emulator is connected. So far looks like only thing that is toast now is the usb (no loss to me). I'll keep it around and play with it for now, it's not like it's a critical use PC 🤣.😊😊😊
