One of my friends said that he has an retro device that can only use a 30pin DRAM SIMM 4MB module with 4M x 1bit parity 9 chips, but cannot normally use a 4MB module with 4M x 4bit parity 3 chips. What is the difference between the two?

Any hardware open source project on github with 4M x 1bit parity 9 chips circuit diagram ? There are several 3 chips project I I have learnt a lot.

You'll find more reading here 3-chip vs 9-chip 30-pin SIMMs

I think it was due to the way the refresh is done that the 3 chip simm isn't supported while the 9 chip one works.

Right to repair is fundamental. You own it, you're allowed to fix it.
