Hello to all, my XPC randomly shut itself off while I was using it and after some troubleshooting it turns out the culprit is the front panel ribbon cable that connects the power and reset button to the mobo. If I push the excess cable down and make contact with a nearby front panel header on the board the pc turns on and has 0 issues staying on (until I push it again and mess around with its position). Upon removing the cable I can see there are damaged pins on it - the board was removed when I restored the system could i have damaged the cable in the process? Was powering it on for a week after I cleaned everything up however.

The cable seems to have some kind of foil insulation on it which is conductive as it made contact with a ram stick and sparked a bit. I have measured its length and counted its pins to find a replacement which I have found but I am unsure if that insulation was important to its function, or whether or not the official shuttle part is proprietary? It is a 50 pin FFC cable with 0.5mm of distance between its pins, and is a reverse direction cable.

Am I also able to jump the psu and have it power the system on automatically when I plug it into power? I know you can do it when the atx connector isnt plugged in but can you do it when it is connected, from the top? Don't want to risk it before asking. What about soldering wires with a connector onto the power buttons pins and plugging it into the JP8 header? Like this https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/194953298971

This is the cable I found

The fact that this board has 2 front panel headers, and it decides to use the weird one is pissing me off 🤣. Probably because of firewire?

Board manual is here (FS56 V2.0, the v2.0 is important to note) https://theretroweb.com/motherboard/manual/fs … 34152913995.pdf

Yeah agree it is one odd front panel cable. Hmm usually the foil is for shielding, not sure why it is not coated for electrical insulation. Yes you could have damaged it as it similar to a laptop internal cable which can be easily damaged.
Sorry cannot help beyond that. Maybe someone else has some info ?

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

Very odd indeed, theres nothing I can junk in my house that has that ribbon cable in it - had to make an order. God help me if they dont work 🤣. The thing that confuses me is why it worked for so long before dying.. Anyone know anything about jumping a psu thats connected to a board?
