I'm having some issues with this win98 build and need some help.

My main issue is that as soon as I install either of my Soundblaster live PCI cards in any slot it takes forever (5 mins) to boot into windoze.

The other problem I have is that I cannot update the BIOS, I was trying to run the 'ASUS Update' utility from Windows but the K8V.ISO I found on the archive.org wouldn't run the update program (after successful installation) due to missing DLL's.

I'm running Win98 SE BTW, haven't installed any sound card or video drivers yet but have installed the ASUS VIA 4.1 drivers in Windows.

Anyone got ideas?

Thanks 😀

Try using VIA Hyperion Pro 4-in-1 version 5.09A. That release worked the best on my K8V-MX under Win98SE. It should still be available on VIA's website.

As for SBLive cards, from my experience, they sometimes have issues even on later VIA chipsets due to the well known latency bug. It might be possible to alleviate some of that with third-party patches, but I would recommend using an Audigy 2 or ZS card instead. Those cards don't suffer from the aforementioned issue and will give you less of a headache on VIA systems.

There is a known bug in certain BIOS that prevents these motherboards from working properly with Windows 98. I tested several BIOS with my K8V SE Deluxe, and found that it works well with 1001 to 1005.

Thanks, will try 😀

How did you update the BIOS, with Ausupdate in Win98?

As stated in the linked thread, I used a USB drive formatted with Rufus. But is there an issue that you're having that a BIOS update will solve? I'll admit that most of the time I update to the last BIOS available, but in this case, if you already have BIOS 1001 through 1005, you don't want a newer one if you want to use Windows 98.

oh yes okay, I'll take a look to see how you updated it.

I'm not sure if my issue can be fixed with a BIOS update or if I need to use a different sound card (as was already suggested).

Old hardware is so much fun LoL

Hi,

So win98 seems to be working well now 😀

Can you let me know which version of 3DMark I should install to benchmark this setup and what kind of figures to look for (to make sure it's setup properly)

Specs are:

AMD 64 3200+ running at 2200 Mhz
GeForce 4 ti 200

Thanks
Chris

You can download 3DMark 99, 2000, and 2001SE straight from the developer's website. They made those old versions free a while back, and even provided the serial numbers.

As for the scores, I remember getting around 12000 in 3DMark 2001SE on a similar system when using a GeForce 4 Ti4200. You may also want to benchmark a few games like Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament to get a more complete picture.

Finally got this computer working, swapped to an Audigy zs and Direct X 9.0c.

Sound card had to be in the first slot to be recognized for some strange reason and the driver install was very painful, anyway it seems to be working okay now...thanks peoples.
