Hello everyone,

I need help with my Compaq Contura 4/25 mono laptop.

It was working fine until yesterday. It happened suddenly. The displayed screen is yellow.
The laptop was turned off and turned on again but nothing helped.
When I move the contrast slider it doesn't respond.
I'm looking for information on what could have been damaged

I am attaching photos of the fault and photos of the components.

Please give me directions on locating the fault and help me solve the problem.

Best regards Marcin from Poland.

Welcome to the forum 😀

The problem you're facing is likely down to that brightness and contrast adjustment board, which generates the LCD voltages needed to make and alter the contrast. There are some links and discussion in a previous similar thread with a very similar Compaq Contura laptop: Contura 3/25S no screen after cleaning & recapping

To start with, carefully desolder and replace C33, which is a 22uF 35volt cap. I don't have this laptop so I can't measure it but there is going to be a serious height restricting as it's in the screen, so any replacement will need to be the same height/size or bent sideways and carefully positioned to fit.

Has it been near any significant heat sources since yesterday, or do you smell something vinegary?

Hello Thermalwrong

Honestly, you hit the jackpot with this capacitor.
I replaced it with an electrolytic capacitor.
The Compaq Contura screen came back to life !!!

I have another problem with the matrix, but I don't think it will be possible without replacing it.

Unfortunately, I don't have another functional one to replace.

Is it possible to do something about it?

Below are photos of the problem.

Thanks again for your help.

My Contura has gone a bit washed out maybe I should try the recap there.

However I think that what your seeing for the other thing is permanent screen damage that might not go away. Maybe a pressure spot... Sometimes with LCD you can kinda gently massage them to move the fluid around a bit to restore areas where it has lost it's properties a little, but this is not usually a massive improvement.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.
