Hi there! No, I don't think you did something wrong. But maybe one step is missing.
The XT-IDE ROM needs to be modified with the supplied XT-IDE utility first.
The utility (xtidecfg.com, for DOS) adds a checksum, which is required.

You can try my old personal backups, as an alternative. They're old, but ready to use.
Re: IDE disk-on-module + 386

Edit: You already ran xtidecfg, okay..
Maybe it's also related to the PC or network card somehow.
The backups should work, though.

your backup worked for an at28c64, what chip did you use for the large one?

AT28C64 or AT28C64B? There is a difference.
Not all ETH chips guarantee that unused address lines will always be held high (RTL8019A does) plus the 3Com setup programs insists on testing the EPROM before accepting config changes.

Use B parts or even EPROMs instead of EEPROMs. If using bigger capacity chip make sure to fill the entire memory space with mirror copies of the data. And lastly make sure the part used is 150ns or better, and if it's older and used EPROM it could have degraded, look for 100ns or even 70ns to be on the safe side.
