Hi! I recently picked up a customized 486-33DX PC that was built by a local company that no longer exists. I'm trying to find information about it but so far have had zero luck. It has only one place on the motherboard with what looks like a model number on it - 92118-4 - and in the corner it has an "A" logo - if I could at least identify the logo with a company that'd probably help (it doesn't seem to be AOpen or Asus or Acer but maybe I'm wrong there). I've done a fair number hours searching with zero luck. Anybody got a guess on this? Thanks!

I have a Cyrix 5x86-100GP processor that I'd like to try to upgrade it with, I tried the recommended settings for a 486DX2-100 that are on the board (see the following pic), but no joy. I then tried every variation of the JP1 and JP9 jumpers, no luck there either. I've put back the 486DX-33 and its working again, so at least I haven't killed the board. 😁 There are a bunch of other jumpers on the board and there isn't anything on the board itself to tell me what they are.

Take a picture of the BIOS screen, the BIOS string visible at the bottom of the screen should help to identify the manufacturer.

Given the logo type I would've said it's AOpen but the "48.84001.004" part code looks like Acer.

edit: Found it! https://theretroweb.com/motherboards/s/acer-i … gxi-model-i433a
To find it I typed in the chipset "m1419" on the retroweb's motherboard search in the chipset box, selected the only suggested option, then looked at which boards had an 8-bit ISA slot in the same location 😀
That board is wayyy too early to use a Cyrix 5x86 directly. You could perhaps use that type of CPU if it was an upgrade processor with integrated VRM, cooling, fixes for compatibility etc.

DX2-80 is the most that's properly possible, but it's ISA only so really best suited for a 486SX-25 or 486DX-33.

You're awesome! Yes, the BIOS string matches. I'm not too unhappy I can't use the Cyrix, it was only a couple bucks when I got it. Thanks for the search tips too, I'll note that for the future. Interestingly, the "do not touch factory only" jumpers are not set in the way that the documentation says they should be. as the machine is working, I don't think I'll play with those. Thanks again!

Guess what the "A" in "AOpen" stands for? AOpen is Acer's retail brand. Things branded Acer were intended for OEM.

Ah that makes sense, thank you 😀 I was wondering why AOpen disappeared over the years, eventually it just became all Acer again. (huh, looks like they make digital signage stuff now, nice but that's not motherboards so...)

Aopen was a budget component manufacturer and it was one of the cheapest one you could buy.
I had once a cheap 56x Aopen CD-drive in early 2000 when I was like 15 years old.
From my experience I personally stay away from: Aopen or Acer products they usually are not that enjoyable.
( and people know it is a cheap brand. )

You cant really stay away from Acer, they are HUGE. You might own Acer designed and build laptop right now without knowing it 😀
