So I had this motherboard that I got from ODwilly,

It came to me with exploded varta and missing bios chip.

Yesterday I went to address the varta issue and accidentally made the situation worse when a blob of solder fell onto the northbridge pins

A hour or two later I finally got the solder off the pins and out from under the NB after removing the chip entirely. However,

The traces under the bridge are loose making the repair beyond difficult. (They don’t seem attached very well like modern pcbs.) the board seems to be in need of someone with finer equipment and skill than I.

I thought to myself, this sounds like a job for Tony359 and his YouTube Chanel.

So, as I prepare to send it to him, I thought I’d poll the Vogons think tank as to what chip should be ordered for the bios and what Bios bin files should be used.

Any thoughts? A Mr Bios would be fun. But a Jan patched one would be even better!

I’ll try to upload a nice high res when I get back home.

But it looks very similar!

Nice. All socketed chips were removed, but the dirty tag ram was forgotten. Careless.
EDIT: correction: The keyboard chip and the crystal oscillator weren't removed either.
Interesting crystal is 34MHz? It is an overclocker board 😁

I borrowed those cache chips for my other project :p Gateway 2000 overdrive build

I recently got some others I will include when sending 😀

I see. 25ns chips omg. Are they able to handle 2-1-1-1 / 2 at 33MHz?
But on the other hand, really old Micron SRAMs, maybe valueable from historical point of view.

I found this cache in a motherboard that long ago had been turned into a wall clock.

8x256
1x128

Does this look proper?

It is a what I will send along.

With an ISA slot effectively blocking the board's model number ... 🤣 It's a "Hot XXXXX3" (or maybe 😎

Please use the "quote" option if asking questions to what I write - it will really up the chances of me noticing 😀

ah, I didn't see the model - but I guessed it right, cool!

The BIOS is on TRW, it's a 64KB file so shall I assume a 27C512 would work as a BIOS chip?

I can't wait to wash that board! 😁

I am not 100% sure about the Aster 16kx8 Tag RAM. Was there before a 32kx8 chip inside?
If I were you, I would have put the orginal SRAMs back in.

If I recall, all chips I took out were 256 byte. Which is why I was wondering about the 128 byte one.

This is why I asked, but these chips came out of a configuration that I assume worked as a set at one point..?

Anyway, why I asked.

16kx8 tag is sometimes used for 256kb configs.
But I once saw a board, which had an extra jumper for "Aster Tag RAM"

update!

Tony359 got the board repaired, post, and even got the cache chips I sent working!

he's going to play with the battery and see if it can take a coin cell.

one thing left that I think would be cool is a Mr Bios for it. anyone familiar with the Mr bios collection enough to suggest one to try?

when I get it back, or if Tony wants to continue tinkering with it, next up is to:
- install a AnyCLK in the place of that crystal
- install a pod83, or a amd 133 on interposer
- see if ram maxes out at 32 or 128 mb
- see if it supports more cache
-install windows 95 and play sim city, solitaire, myst, RA1!

wooo, maxi spoiler here! You ruined the surprise! 😀

The battery holder is also fitted, I think (hope) I was able to remove the 5V charging the battery by removing an SMD diode which was nearby. I've got into the BIOS - which had reset meanwhile - and set time date and some things. Tomorrow we will know if it works. The remaining diode is a low voltage drop so you end up with 3V after it which should be ok.

The holder happened to be exactly the size of the holes so no bodges there.

Remind me: where are the bios settings stored??
