I'm looking for a narrow set of requirements for benchmarking Windows 95 systems with DirectX 5 installed. I'm looking for any games or demos that either can display an FPS counter or perform a benchmark time demo.

Because I want to limit this to DirectX 5 / OpenGL compatible software, I believe this limits things from 1995 to 1997 or so. Therefore no Half-Life, Unreal, etc.

So far I've got:

  • Final Reality
  • GL Quake
  • Quake 2

Any other suggestions?

GLQuake does not use DirectX but OpenGL (there's a little hint in the name, if you look closely). Maybe look into DirectQ instead. I have no idea which DX version it's using though.

Speaking of id's games - How about Doom95? Granted, it came out way before v5 of DX, but it is using some version of it and you can run timedemos.

Tomb Raider - Do you mean the second one? Iirc TR1 is a DOS title, i.e. no DX there either.

POD (Planet of Death), Dark Force 2: Jedi Knight, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, Wipeout 2097 and the first Turok game come to mind.

They all have Direct3D renderers, though I'm not sure if they have a frame rate counter. However, you can of course use Fraps to get a FPS counter.

It's been a while since I played Doom95, so I could be wrong, but I think it uses GDI and not DirectX.

Had a quick glance at this list of games sorted by DX version looking for possible cndidates. I think Forsaken had some kind of benchmark mode too. Not 100% positive though.

Doom Wiki claims it was a DX flagship product; maybe you're thinking of WinDoom, which used WinG? In any case, I should point out that it's still software rendered, so no stress testing 3D acceleration hardware with (it if that's what OP is going for).

Turok has a (rather lengthy) benchmark.

My builds!
The FireStarter 2.0 - The wooden K5
The Underdog - The budget K6
The Voodoo powerhouse - The power-hungry K7
The troll PC - The Socket 423 Pentium 4

DX9. no source port that has added D3D to Quake ever went below DX8

I should include OpenGL as well. I edited the opening post accordingly.

Interesting, I hadn't even thought of Doom ports outside of the DOS version. I'll take a look.

Tomb Raider - Do you mean the second one? Iirc TR1 is a DOS title, i.e. no DX there either.

Good point, I removed TR from the list. For some reason I always think of it as a Windows game probably because I only ever install it on Windows 95 machines.

Did some Googling and it looks like it can run a timedemo with a reported frame rate.

I'll add it to the list.

Hexen 2 and also Redline Racer. The latter, wikipedia will tell you released in 98, but I promise I'm staring at a disc with a 1997 date on it that came with our gateway p2-300mhz that we also got in 1997.

CD says copyright 1997 and file dates on CD go as far as 1997-12-22 so its feasible it went gold in 1997 (thats when master disc was pressed), but they were too late for Christmas and game released in 1998

As mentioned, Turok has one; and you can benchmark not only Direct3D, but SGL, CIF, and Glide. You'll find the game being used in several 'Tom's Hardware' articles of the time.

Turok.exe -benchmark

Whatever you set the last configuration of the game at (resolution, mipmapping, etc.) - that's what the benchmark will run (per last selected renderer).

It goes on forever, so you'll have to end it by Alt + F4. Three loops are good enough. Don't hit escape - it just skips you to the next level.

If you want to run the Glide renderer at 800x600 - you'll need to edit the config.ned file directly. Otherwise, it's 640x480. I've attached the file I use for reference (extension changed to .txt). Once you edit the file, do not select performance options for Glide, or they will be lost, and you'll have to re-add 800x600.

Also possible maybe they had a deal with Gateway that it was an exclusive bundle for a while or something of the sort. Maybe my version isn't even complete, I dunno I've never played it any other way but that disc haha.

Edit: Just checked, my disc looks different and the files are marked a month prior. Really curious what the story is here...

It's definitely a mid-late 1998 retail launch in the US. All the professional critic reviews are 1998 as well. Perhaps it's an OEM exclusive early limited build ( similar to Jazz2's situation ), or an european release (press reviews from early 98 March could likely be written in 97 November/December)

It's not the only Ubisoft release that had a year held back for the US launch.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

I've now obtained a copy of Forsaken and am going to try to track down Turok as well.

I'll research the other suggestions as well, I see what I can get ahold of.

Anyone know how to benchmark with Forsaken? I have the full game patched to version 1.01 but I don't see an obvious option to run the benchmark.

I remember this being a popular title for testing early 3D accelerators back in the day, and I'd like to use it for that purpose as well. Mostly for comparing early Direct3D cards like the S3 Virge and the Matrox Millennium II.

EDIT - found it. Apparently, it's Load Game > Play Demo. After the demo finishes (which takes ages) once again go to Load Game > Play Demo to see the average FPS.
