Hi,

I have an old 386 laptop from 1991, there is the DS1287 rtc with integrated battery that is completely dead. The HDD is 60MB Conner CP2064, I have found the parameters online, but when i try to enter them to BIOS and save it, the systen reboots and forgets the settings again... Is that possible? I always thought that the settings are kept there until i power off the system.

Thanks,

Lu.

Yes, it is possible. The bios checks bit 7 of register D of the 1287, which indicates Valid Time & Ram and if this bit is zero, according to the datasheet, it indicates an empty battery.
the bios sees this bit, and concludes the settings are invalid.

though that's just a guess of mine.

Doing a battery mod on those is easy enough.

Right to repair is fundamental. You own it, you're allowed to fix it.

I have a 386 SBC system that behaved exactly like that. I had to do battery mod, because it "forgot" all settings including floppy type after saving and reboot. So it was unusable.

I had a 486 that couldn't remember the hard drive settings and forgot them after exiting the bios screen. Therefore I threw it out.

I had a car with remote unlock not working, also threw it out
