I pulled my Compaq LTE 5400 out of the closet after a few years to do some tinkering. The battery was dead, of course, as was the CMOS and hard drive. I ordered a replacement CMOS battery, dropped a CF card in and got as far as running FDISK from a Windows 98 recovery disk. My plan was to copy CD contents onto a secondary partition and install from there.

Unfortunately, now after POST it doesn't seem to even try to access the floppy drive before giving me a "no boot disk" error. I've triple-checked the BIOS settings. I've tried multiple disks. I haven't tried cracking anything open yet. Ideas?

I assume you have the boot order set to boot from a: first? Maybe when the cmos battery died it forgot the settings.
