Hello, plain simple, I am trying to find the best media player for the best socket 7 cpu.
Media player classic black edition is a no go because it needs SSE.
Any alternative? Or a custom build of MPC-BE without the need of SSE?

Try the Windows 98 build of MPlayer, or the "generic" build if running Windows XP. Older video cards might require 16-bit colour and/or the -vo directx command-line switch for optimal performance.

VLC is not good for me.
Winamp is for mp3/audio AFAIK
Do not know foobar2000. Can it run mp4 enjoying some kind of hardware acceleration from gpu?

Nope - only hardware decoders (REAL Magic X card PCI or CrystalHD mini-pci) can help

Need help? Begin with photo and model of your hardware 😉

Let’s assume it can be done, my question is which program can do this without SSE?
That is what I am asking.

libav and ffmpeg based stuff, maybe with compile flags off? Getting away from directshow might be the only way to get newer code, which stands to be faster.

I get surprisingly good performance from a core2duo running MPV from deb-multimedia, on Debian. 1080p h264 is nearly all fine, just the odd scene that slows down. But a SS7? I guess MPEG2 at DVD levels might be possible with good software, otherwise it'd have to be the pirate style of the time: 1/4 DVD size, as a DivX.

Otherwise, there is no insane graphics card that can help? Though the Radeon in the machine mentioned above has worse h264 decoding than in software.

X card tested with standart Windows Media Player (non-Classic) and Xmedia player.

Mplayer was a no go.
I think I will post on video subsection.

Mplayer works well, i have 3dnow version of it, maybe it needed dx9 or two files from dx9, I can share it later today or tomorrow.

There are many players that work for AMD K6-II and K6-III for Dos/Win9x, for DVD i use ATiDVD 3.2 (Rage Pro/Rage128Pro). Mplayer should also support DVD, can someone help how to use mpf or mplayer without frontend for DVD, then i can uninstall ATiDVD. Added my old mplayer-k6.zip.

Yes was taken down. He left out the GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE text file so the bots figured it was not open source (which it is)
His post is MPC-HC v1.9.13.x86. You can get it from videohelp in the old versions...suggest you get the zip version.
Not sure how it will work with a K6-2 since it requires SSE2 iirc. added: the original dev page: https://mpc-hc.org/

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

I went ahead and actually tested the two MPlayer builds. Indeed, the "generic" build crashes on a K6-2; however, the Windows 98 build seems to work. It will run on Windows 2000/XP as long as the included psapi.dll file is renamed.
