I've seen a lot of bundled DOS4GW.EXE with games that have timestamps that predate much earlier than their release dates, at least for the non-statically linked ones.

Can it be an accurate indicator for determining when the game started its production? For the Doom alphas, the DOS4GW comes from Nov '92, which is the date of the first Doom Bible written by Tom Hall.
