This topic may not be placed on the right place in this forum but her is my dilema.
As updates and all security patches and all drivers for XP are about to get canceled for good, i decided to make myself a backup of all updatex/hotfixes/patches whaever you wanna call it. But, somewhere in process of searching for list of all updates i ran across some handy programs that do all the work for you. You just simply import "update list" in those programs and they download patches from that list. And that got almost all patches MS has on their website. Ok, im not into that, i want to have clean XP instalation disc and all updates aside so i can choose
what to install. So now somebody will say "install SP3 and that's it". I don't want too, there are so many updates in that SP that i really don't need or never use, so i just need to instal some of the security patches. Browsing through MS website you can see what updated are included in which SP.
Just to help you out :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946480
Not going to count but id say hmm 500 of them ?
First question : Can i somehow download all of them but not compressed in i SP but individually (let's say a big *.RAR file ) with everything inside?
And that does not include downloading each one of them from MS site, filling that form so they send it to your email..Just too much work...
Second question : On that same MS page linked above you can see "For example, Windows XP SP3 contains all the fixes that are included in Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). ". Hmm, i tried to cross reference few updates that are listed in SP2 and guess what, they do not appear in SP3? What is that all about? Shouldnt SP3 be an updated list of SP2 patches?
Question three: Somewhere on the MS site is also this page :
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/dn481339
Just to make even more confusion lets choose Microsoft Windows XP professional in the "product/component" menu.. You got 4 updates..What? 4? Then you switch to XP SP1 and you got 123. Same thing you switch to SP3 and SP3. I dont undestand this. What does it mean ?
Are this 123 patches (after selecting XP SP1) inside SP1 or are they released after SP1? If they were released after SP1 shouldnt they be in SP2, as service packs are cumulative?! Ok, other way around, if they were released after, for example let's look at SP3. It says 304 patches !
As the date is 11.3.2014 for the last hotfix I'll assume everything listed here is post that product you choose in menu. So, 304 patches after SP3.
But again, If they list 123 updates after SP1, shouldnt they just be in SP2 and not listed here? So When you select SP1 there should be list of SP2,SP3, and all updates after SP3.
Bit of help here please ?...Im confused and would really like to have all of the updates but i just can't see any logic in these lists...

AFAIK the existing updates, service packs and drivers will still be served. There won't be any FUTURE updates but what is available stays available. So far that's how it works for Windows 9x and 2k.
I could be wrong though...

Maybe abit overkill but a wsus server lets you pick and choose updates as MS purposely do this in case an update breaks some function in any poorly written program a company may use.

I think part of the whole mess of updates is, you get updates of updates sometimes in the space of a week or so when MS realise it's causing more trouble then good. and as you have said there are plenty of hotfix's MS don't make available on their website or though windows update but do end up including in a SP.

I know with Compaq OEM CD's you need SP1 installed SP3, not sure for a MS branded CDs? so seems like service packs aren't fully cumulative in my experience at least.

Although I must admit I don't fully get the point of picking security updates to such a level? an OS exploit still exists no matter if you use it or not. Your still vulnerable to say an ODBC exploit no matter if you have a anything that uses this or not.
I get it for say an office SP where it includes patches all the programs and you may not have outlook or whatever installed but XP service packs only really patch the core OS

There's a unofficial XP SP4 on the MSFN forums.

As for future updates XP embedded and 2003 will still be patched for awhile so just like 2000 it's possible those updates will be ported to XP.

Seems to me no one is really sure what way this updates are updated and in what order...I am not worried about the updates, will they still countinue to produce them or not, Im just interested where can I download them all. Anyone got a link ? And no, Im not going to download all of them from official site because of that stupid form you got to fill in...Just imagine filling that form 1000times...

If you want official approved method then you'll have to use WSUS integrated with Windows 2008+
or
WSUS with 2003 but 2003 will be EOL next year....

I like to use Autopatcher, which can be used to install a whole bunch of patches at once, but which also serves (via "apup") as a handy way for downloading individual patches en masse from Microsoft.

Don't let the sketchy look of the forums turn you off.

I did use program from second link..But problem is still there. Look at the links i gave in my first post. That downloader will download 193 patches
from his update lists when you pick XP SP3. 193 ! And now go back to MS site (second link if i recall) and there are 300 patches ! Ok, where is the rest? That kind of things im talking about. Thats why I just dont like to use any of the automated programs. They just don't get the job done right... !

I don't understand the difficulty.

"The following code sample is a batch file that installs multiple product updates and makes sure that the correct files are replaced after the computer is restarted.
@echo off
setlocal
set PATHTOFIXES=E:\hotfix

%PATHTOFIXES%\Q123456_w2k_sp4_x86.exe /Z /M
%PATHTOFIXES%\Q123321_w2k_sp4_x86.exe /Z /M
%PATHTOFIXES%\Q123789_w2k_sp4_x86.exe /Z /M"

Run dir from the command line and redirect to a text file.
Import to excel.
Add a random value to the next cell.
Duplicate for the rest of the lines.
Replace value with command line switches for update.
Export to .txt
Rename to batch.
Execute
Note errors and remediate.
Done.

It was much more difficult in the old days and if you use WSUS you don't have to bother with the above.
