Did anyone construct their own Pinball Construction Set tables back in the day? I'm curious to see what folks could do with this. Are there any archives of .PB files available for download anywhere?

Is this too much voodoo?

Yes, but that was in floppy era, and I have lost my disk (that contained my self-made tables).

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

All of the custom tables I've encountered were published by their creators as self-contained .COM executables; I doubt you could load these on anything but a PC. 😉

Yeah, I was hoping for the .PB data files so the tables can be examined/edited. Is the format of this file the same for all platforms? e.g. can a table created using Apple II PCS be opened by PC PCS, and vice versa?

There are at least two .PB formats. The 1982 (pre-release version, Apple II only, the one that most pirates had, likely stolen, definitely incomplete) vs 1983 (final version on Apple II, RTM, possibly common to all other platforms).

I never owned the game until I was sent a copy to cover on ADG. I did make a couple custom tables with it for the video and they can be downloaded from this page on my website: http://www.pixelships.com/misc/pcs.html

I DID however own Pinball Wizard (aka Macadam Bumper) as a kid, but I've long since lost all of the custom tables I made for it. Most of them sucked anyways because I was only around 7 years old. :P

Thanks. I like the 2nd one with the little mini table at the top.

There must have been countless numbers of these made in the 80s.

Oh wait, I got confused; I've never played Pinball Construction Set. What I played is a similar game called 'Pinball Wizard' which I've never managed to find on MobyGames --only to find recently that the original name is Macadam Bumper.

I'm going to look at that next! I've been hearing about both these games since forever but never actually played them until now.

I've covered both Macadam and PCS on my show:

Macadam Bumper / Pinball Wziard

Pinball Construction Set

Generally speaking, PCS is the better program, but Macadam has a couple things going for it all the same. :B

I wish either game has modern remake. 🙁

There's actually a couple options for doing custom pinball tables nowadays. The simplest program to use is Future Pinball, however, development on it stopped many years ago so even though it's easy to use, it has technical issues abound. OTOH, Visual Pinball is still in active development and is extremely powerful, with people going so far as to accurately recreate real pinball tables with it, but it's a lot harder to use.

The trouble with pinball creation software in general is that there's no simple way to allow for extreme flexibility, so any of the software out there which can do it is generally powerful but hard to use, or easy to use with fewer customization potentials.
