Not fluently, but I can read some Spanish and Russian. I took 3 yrs of Spanish in high school and worked many years with non-English speaking Hispanic folks. My heritage is Russian but I was born in the states. I heard it growing up, so could speak conversationally, then took a couple of semesters at university which taught me the alphabet and how to sound out words.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

I can speak a little bit of Spanish. I took 1 year in high school and 1 semester in college. I still have my Spanish book from college. I have clients that are from a certain area, and luckily, my pronunciation was spot on. I almost gave a cute redhead girl in my Spanish class in college my number. Wish I would've done that.

Russian.

My native Polish plus knowledge of Russian allows me to read and understand fairy well other Slavic languages, like Ukrainian, Czech, Slovak, and to lesser extent Serbian/Croatian, Bulgarian. (in speech this works much worse because of very different pronunciation between languages)

Some basic Japanese (I may understand the grammar but I need a dictionary almost every other word, my vocabulary and knowledge of characters is limited).

Took 5 years of Spanish from junior high into high school. Retained a smattering of it, if you don't use it, you lose it. I can understand a little basic Japanese too.

I learned some Indonesian in school.

It came in handy recently when I was playing Delta Force: Land Warrior. Some of the missions take place in that area of the world, and when you shoot and wound the bad guys they yell out "Ibu, Ibu!" which I recall means "Mother, Mother!"

I'm fluent in English and German & I know a fair bit of Dutch. This basically gets me every other language on the West Germanic branch & a lot of the North Germanic branch for free. (Note: the OP asked can you read, not necessarily understand when spoken.)

I also speak French and some Indonesian/Malay.

I grew up in Romania but I am also fluent in English as I lived in both UK and now in US. I also published in English (computer graphics books). I can also read (and speak a bit) French.

Indeed, I remember it too. And being an Indonesian myself, the dubber sounds like a native Indonesian speaker to me.

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

German and Swedish, but not really functionally. Wish I could read those German retro forums, it's such a huge community.
