Hi everyone,

Just found an interesting article/blog entry regarding Prince of Persia.
It includes pictures, a video of its creator and describes the hacks involved to make it happen. 😀

Have fun!

Ars's "War Stories" series has been excellent so far; the episodes they did with the creators of Crash Bandicoot & Myst were also fascinating. PoP is a personal all-time favorite (even if I'm not all that good at it 😜 ), so it was really cool to see Jordan Mechner's insights into development of the game. Was interesting how long he said the game was planned to be enemy-less, and how the 'Shadow' character was a concession to keep it running in 48k. AFAIK the finished Apple II version (guards and all) requires 128k, so it was probably a good thing he abandoned that constraint. I can't imagine the game would've been so notable without the sword fighting.

PS Mechner has posted lots of development tidbits on his own YT channel, for those of you who didn't know about it:

I suppose we all know by now about his books, but in case someone hasn't heard of them in his personal site Jordan Mencher has two excellent books/journals: The Making of Prince of Persia and The Making of Karateka.

Outtakes From the making of Prince of Persia video:

"What if I Exclusive-ORed each byte with itself shifted one bit over?"
How graphics used to be done 😀

"The first draft of the story for the Sands of Time had been much more complicated with a kind of political intrigue and different factions within the kingdom; so for the final game we ended up stripping all of that out"
Maybe that's the reason why Sands of Time rocks and the first Assassin's Creed blows? Nah, I guess it's the terrible combat and the fact the game feels like a loitering simulator in a pre-COVID19 market.
