I used to be able to do this by enabling file sharing and discovery and dropping the items I want to send in the Public or Shared folder. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

For reasons I can't fathom Microsoft have removed this feature and from my Googling you now you have to click share and it shows all "nearby" sharing devices but it doesjt seem to work for me despite Nearby Sharing being turned on on both PCs. Difficult difficult lemon difficult.

Regardless I'd like to set up something a little more permanent so I can shuttle 6GB files between PCs easily....

Any ideas how I do this these days?

Unless something has changed in the 2004 update it hasn't changed much since early NT days (skip down to "Sharing folders using File Explorer" section)

Browsing the network has always been bit hit or miss, entering \\192.168.1.1 in the address bar never fails though.

This is for modern windows though. My Win10 laptop doesn't like my XP PC. I know it can be done but haven't had the need to work out what its problem is.
SMB1 is also removed in currant Win10 versions but is easy enough to enable if you are trying to connect to XP or earlier
