I still haven't finished, and still love to death, Missionforce: Cyberstorm. You get to manage the equipment your Hercs (same as mechs in Mechwarrior) use and balance them as far as weight, speed, firepower, etc. And in battle you can manage which weapons you fire first, and control which chemicals you pump up the Derm (pilot) with to affect abilities.
I always enjoyed the details you play with in this game, and its an older, inexpensive title, now. In fact when last I bought it, it came with two discs so you can play multiplayer with a friend. Good soundtrack, too.
I still haven't finished this game because it gets hella hard later, and more complicated designing your herc squads for mining and defense units. Sometimes, enemy presence is so high and dangerous that you put mining equipment on an otherwise war/assault based herc.
I could go on and on, but imo this is a must-have title that is just as fun, today.
