Hell, I just received an email from someone called Irina Rozvora (irozzora@rochester.rr.com), requesting me to send her US $100. Nonetheless, it seems she's a legitimate PayPal member, since her Money Request also showed up in my PayPal.

Here's the full email header:

While I'm indeed looking for an IBM ThinkPad T23 motherboard on ebay (and bidding on several), I haven't won any. I never purchased any ThinkPad T23 motherboard from her either. Besides, the item she mentioned (IBM THINKPAD T23 WORKING MOTHERBOARD) is not even an ebay item.

So it is obvious that she's a fraudster who's trying to lure me into sending her US $100 --using the fact that I'm indeed looking for a ThinkPad T23 motherboard.

What actually disturbs me is: HOW DID SHE KNOW? How did she know that I'm looking for IBM T23 mobo, that, in her frauding attempt, she wrote it as the name of the 'item' I'm supposed to pay?

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

Update: she's actually an ebay seller, and she's been trying to sell the item in an "out-of-ebay" transaction after I inquiried her about the mobo. Apparently I missed her previous email (duh!), which offers me the mobo for US $100.

However, I still think it's odd, because I still haven't even replied her previous email --I haven't even agreed to buy the mobo from her, and she already sent me a PayPal Money Request. WTF? Besides, isn't "out-of-ebay" transaction unsafe? So the point is: she tried asking me for buying the mobo outside ebay, and she already sent me a Money Request even before I agree with the transaction.

If you're in my shoes, would you go on with the transaction?

Something smells fishy here, but there seems to be a plausible explanation for her conduct. Maybe she is trying to avoid ebay fees, although on $100 the fee is not very high. This is almost assuredly a violation of ebay's terms of service, and ebay also owns paypal.

I think is worst likely explanation is that she made some representation in the auction that no longer holds true and is trying to avoid ebay difficulties by selling it outside of ebay. However, asking for money before you agreed to buy it could simply be a case of over-zealous selling.

Is $100 a good price for the Thinkpad motherboard? Is it something you must have? Unless it is a very good price, I would pass on this one. If not, make sure you read up on paypal's fraud policies before you consider it.

Even with the new info, the verdict is still pass on this one.
