I just purchased SSI's Stronghold: Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Kingdom Simulator from ebay. The documentations come on the CD. Alas, they all come in .DOX format, which I've never heard of. The manual files are ADD.DOX, STRONG.DOX, BUILD.DOX, and CHEAT.DOX.

The CD includes an executable named DOX.EXE in its manual folder. However, I just could not execute the program. Everyime I clicked the executable in Windows Exlporer, it promptly quit. I have tried executing the DOX.EXE from DOSBox (0.70), but it still quit as well. I also have tried adding the .DOX file name as parameter (i.e: DOX.EXE STRONG.DOX), but te result stayed the same.

Anyone experienced with this DOX.EXE before? What is the correct command line parameter(s) to view the .DOX files? Alternatively, is there any known Windows-based .DOX reader out there? I have Googled, but to no avail.

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

Hi KAN!

About those DOX... I seem to remember those! Despite the unusual format, I believe you could open them with a regular text editor (notepad, wordpad,Word, etc.) with the probability to have some slight formatting issues, but they should still be viewable.

If you still don't succeed, you could post a sample of one of those files here to see what we can come up with. 😉

Ah, you're correct! It's a plain TXT file, only with different extension! I'm an idiot *castrates self*

Hmmm... it seems to me that the .DOX file somehow adhere to certain formatting rules, although not as strict as, say, HTML. Here's an example:

STRONGHOLD MANUAL

I think the "--" symbol means page break of some sort.

PS: I renamed STRONG.DOX to STRONG.TXT because I got the error message "DOX extension is not allowed".

Glad I could help, KAN! 😎

However, don't blame yourself, happens to everyone once in a while... 😀

[sarcasm]And what kind of extension is DOX??? Sounds like a warez kind of thing... What's the deal?!?! 😁 [/sarcasm]

It's indeed as I remembered, the DOX is a plain text file but with a "strange" text format. I only wonder if there's a proper editor for this specific extension.

I'll give it a search and let you know in a while...

Yes, but self-castration is fun, especially in front of webcam. 😁

Thanks! While Notepad is fine, I'm actually curious if there is a working DOX reader out there. I believe a DOX reader should be able to display the document in the intended format, such as putting page breaks and page number in the parts where the "--" sign is displayed (such as "--Page 1--" or "--Index").

Ok, I found something...

Saw your post on the TR forums 😁 Google is amazing 😀

Seriously, the only reference I found is the following:

dox200d.zip DOX v2.00 - RTF/TXT/HTML Converter for DOS

Couldn't test it properly cause I'm at work right know.

If it's not what you're looking for, then your only choice is either testing it in real DOS to see if it works properly, or just settle for notepad.

It seems that the .DOX file created by SSI (Stronghold manual) is not the same with Multimate's .DOX files. Here's a snippet of a .DOX file included by Multimate:

LISTACOR

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ

The .DOX file included in Stronghold, on the other hand, is just plain ASCII.

them for combat. You defend your
land from evil enemies. And, you
even have the power to speed up or
pause time in your kingdom.

Furthermore, whenever I open the STRONG.DOX in Multimate, it always prompts for document conversion:
