Good work, but that Star Control 2 tune is not FM in any way. It's a .mod.

Thank you, I believe you are correct.

I have added a comment next to that track in the YT description.

Tragically, Youtube always compresses audio in lossy format, it throws away so much of the high-frequency info, etc. Do you have these tracks in a totally lossless form? (ie, the raw data tracks to be downloaded)?

I have just added a download link to the individual mp3s. Although most of them I sourced from Youtube itself so that won't make any difference then.
At least they can be played in your own player.

You could check out https://VGMrips.net which tries to archive game music in the original instructions sent to the soundchip.

Also
project2612 (http://project2612.org/list.php) VGM music ripped from Sega Genesis and Mega Drive
OPL Archive (http://opl.wafflenet.com/) Specialized, active VGM archive of OPL2, OPL3 (AdLib, SoundBlaster)

That is some High Fidelity right there! Thanks.
What is the name of the track and the composer?

Sigh.... I better start linking all the tracks to VGMrips.net, I guess.... 😉

The song is from Boomer Kuwanger's stage in Megaman X. The MMX soundtrack was redone for Gen/MD sound hardware separately by two different people. Unfortunately I don't remember which one of them did this particular file or I would give proper credit. Maybe someone else can identify it

2017/07/11 22:47 133,952 14 - Boomer Kuwanger.vgm

But this recording is not from a Sega, rather it is from my 286 equipped with 2x YM2203 synths. So that means external 13-bit DACs instead of the YM2612 integrated DAC, 3.58MHz clock instead of 3.83MHz, one chip per speaker, missing PCM, and missing PSG noise.

That is impressive. I imagine your setup would take some serious effort to replicate.
Would a similar result be achievable with a YM2612 emulator and a VGM player that disabled the pcm and psg channels? Maybe using a nice quality USB soundcard for the output?

The emulators are very good these days. You could even say they are better than a recording from hardware, depending on whether you favor the 'authentic' sound or mathematical accuracy... it's kind of like the old CD vs. vinyl debate.

VGM Input Plugin lets you disable channels but it doesn't let you override the panning I don't think. The way YM2612 playback works on my setup is kind of arbitrary anyway, due to choices I made in the program. For instance I left the FM pitches unchanged and corrected the PSG pitches to match that, but I could have done the opposite. (Frequencies can be changed by hex editing the VGM file too, BTW.) Being able to mess with things like that and produce a different sound can be fun.

You can listen to lossless FM music with https://mmontag.github.io/chip-player-js (at 192khz, if your audio device supports it - everything synthesized in realtime). Let me know if you don't find the songs you're looking for.

YU-NO and Snatcher are among my favorites.

The YM2017 album by Catskull Records is notable: https://mmontag.github.io/chip-player-js/brow … s%20-%20YM2017/

Anything by Diode Milliampere: https://mmontag.github.io/chip-player-js/brow … de_Milliampere/

Naruto's MoonDriver: https://mmontag.github.io/chip-player-js/brow … Archive/naruto/

You will also find some treasures in the Sharp X68000 collection:

Hi, did you develop this? Maybe you can help, I'm desperately trying to convert the s98 files of Eve Burst Error (YM2203 version) to record that music with real hardware. I've s98 files but they are version 2 and I need version1 to record them. Maybe you can help me.

Yes, I'm the dev. A while back I did try to use Neko Project to extract Eve Burst Error music, and didn't get anywhere.
But luckily, someone else did - MaliceX (pretty sure he's active here?) has converted EVE Burst Error YM2203 to VGM:

https://vgmrips.net/packs/pack/eve-burst-error-nec-pc-9801

Is this what you're looking for?

I know is available the VGM, but i need the s98 version to be able to use that files with a custom hardware with a real YM2203 Chip (instead of emulator). That's why I was asking if you could convert as well to s98 version 1 file.

Ah, sorry I can't help with that.
Can I ask about the custom hardware? Could a VGM hardware player work with it, such as this one for DOS SBVGM (DOS) VGM Player?
The VGM is, after all, just a list of instructions sent to the sound chip.

You can try this program to convert from VGM to S98.

BTW, has anyone found a VGM rip from PC-88VA 神羅万象 (Shinra Banshou) ? It was in a video clip on nicovideo and sounded pretty good for a game from 1987 (?)

edit: that one had problems. Try this instead.
