Just would like to know, which is the latest anti-virus that is still active in terms of live-update sort of thing for Windows 95? I prefer to have the suite like thing which has built-in firewall like Norton Internet Security 2005.

I'm using Norton Internet Security 2005 for WindowsME / 98SE. All definitions up-to-date.

Wanted to keep my Windows 95 up-to-date too. Can't seem to install NIS 2005 in Windows95. Says missing some dll.

(Unrelated piece of information : I'm using Windows 95 solely for those games that insist on running in 256-colour mode, and those older win95 games that look best in 640x480 res.
Games like System Shock 2, I prefder to play it in WinME or 98.)

If the PC isn't connected directly to the Internet then using a firewall is an overkill. Avast seems to work on Win95. Personally, I rely on my brain to defend against viruses 😉.

Thanks! I'll try the ones mentioned. Just wanted something that still provides online updates and virus definitions updates, and so on, for older OSs.

Disconnect that machine from the Internet at once. No antivirus will keep you safe running that OS online. Scan any files you want to put on the machine using another one first.

Yes, it’s my fault.

I haven't actually connected this partition which is using Windows95 to the internet since I couldn't get an updated antivirus potection for it yet. And I haven't installed firewall in it yet.
Perhaps, I'll just use the WinME/Win98SE to go online in my classic machine.

You shouldn't need real-time antivirus so just use ClamWin.

Stay away from software suites. They almost always suck.

Sure, other pages have been updated. But not that one.

The other, newer pages also don't have Win95 in their metadata and presumably weren't generated on such a machine.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Just thought of this : Is the router's firewall enough or is it still recommended to install another software firewall? If this is enough, it should reduce the resource hog in Win95, correct?

Malik: this is perhaps a bit crazy saying this. But not all GOOD firewalls are resource hogs. Zygate firewall pro is probably the best example of a non resource hog firewall. The only bad thing is, Zygate is no more. But the latest (and last) alpha was leaked before zygate was fucked by Norton , and it still works like a charm to this day. Since I have tested the firewall VERY recently. And if you want to get it, you need to get it, in the "hush hush" way. aka. eye patch way or you can get the normal version from here http://www.oldversion.com/Sygate-Personal-Firewall.html . But the firewall works on Windows 95 and up till windows xp pro.

Thanks a lot, WolverineDK! 😀

I have currently used "Symatec AV5.0 Trial" for my PII-333 (Win9x), but this Version cost a lot of CPU-Power while Scanning files that are currently in use from a connected NAS.
I went for an old mcafee 3.1.4 OEM that does work without any upgrade/timeout. But the defininition-file is quite outdated (somewhere in 1999). Is there a site where I can
download a newer definitions-file for my old scan-engine?

Thx

Tiny Personal Firewall 2.0.15a is really good and the last version that supports Windows 98 SE. I use it along with the most current ClamAV on my Win98 SE machine and never had any issues.

I'm still waiting for something exciting/awful to happen whenever I'm web browsing on a 98SE setup with a super obsolete browser.... Seems like the router firewall is probably enough.

Actually I think I want to jack a 98SE build straight into my cable modem for fun sometime. Let it run for a few days and see what happens.

Probably nothing. A couple of years ago at my last job we had a malware infection that hit all boxes except the Windows 2000 machines.

No money in targeting the older OS.

After that I setup SRP via GP since even after that the company didn't want to spend any money.
