Surprised it hasnt been mentioned such a big annoucement:

http://www.remedygames.com/games/death_rally.html

Death Rally is now freeware. This release is strange, since according to the site, it runs natively in windows, and this game originally was a DOS game. It doesn't run from dosbox from the readme, just native windows. It'd be cool if there was source code as well.

I'm surprised they still retain the source to it after all these years. I'm also surprised it's a purist port, but there are several sound pitch issues that never existed in the DOS version.

Apparently they looked at the other older games' re-release, and wanted to be different, seeing that all these re-releases just bundled dosbox and a pdf with instructions with it. It's amazing and surprising too that they took some time to port the game to windows by editing the source code!! I mean, did they use the original development enviroments, compilers and such? They are probably now finished with alan wake and have time to spare. 😁 Now, if they had included source code, it would have been possible to port multiplayer in it too. This game is a multiplayer game.

There is no "just" in packaging a game with DOSBox. There's alot that goes into doing so assuming it's done properly.

As for multiplayer in the Death Rally port it's not looking likely. They are not releasing source code and the port wasn't done by Remedy it was done by one guy outside of Remedy:

and it looks like as far as he's concerned hes done with it.

Yeah, the game works fine in 64bit since it's a win32 game that uses FMOD/SDL....well everything except multiplayer.

So are we free to redistribute the DOS version then for those who want to play multiplayer? I've never played that game but that question just occurred to me while reading this thread.

The answer is in the Death Rally FAQ:

Is it OK to distribute the DOS version of Death Rally?

No. Death Rally is not "abandonware" and Remedy has only made the Windows re-release free according to the license agreement included in the installation package. Distributing the full DOS version is illegal.

Furthermore, as I alluded to in my post above, the DOS version, far from abandonware, can still be purchased from the 3D Realms store for $6.

Kinda makes it an odd candidate for getting ported like this, really, but I guess Remedy is more open-minded about these things than other companies.

Dunno if I'd go that far. I guess getting something for free is better than nothing, but ironically the DOS version probably has better longevity due to the fact that decent DOS emulators will always be around but Windows game compatibility is likely to break eventually.

There will be better Windows emulation someday. Hopefully. ReactOS development is ongoing, after all.
