MIDIJam, an *extremely* cool MIDI player, but unfortunately can *ONLY* use the bog-standard Microsoft GS Wavetable Software Synthesizer (a.k.a DirectMusic) for it's MIDI output <yuck> 🙁

Was gonna make a YouTube video using MIDIJam and one of my rockier pieces ("Black and White: Live!" -> http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/Weeds_Music/Bl … _White_Live.mp3 ), but I CAN'T STAND/STOMACH the Microsoft GS Wavetable Software Synthesizer ...<eeeccckkkk>.

Tried to record a video using HyperCam *and* CamStudio (without recording sound), and then attempted to mix in the audio from my (excellent sounding <grin>) MP3 (see above). But, alas, I couldn't get the audio and video to sync up properly no matter what I did <aarrgghh>!

Project scrapped...

Anyhow, MIDIJam is pretty cool to watch nontheless; some other third-party YouTube videos of MIDIJam in action -> http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=MIDIJam 😀

Tried recording it in fraps? The shareware version wouldn't do so good being 30 seconds limited, though.

Thanks for the suggestion, leileilol 😀

Actually, I had thought about trying FRAPS as well, but I don't think that the problem is with the screen capture utilities that I used (HyperCam and CamStudio). I think that the problem is that since MIDIJam is using DirectMusic, there must be some inconstancies with the timing; compared to my MP3 (which was recorded using the Yamaha S-YXG50 softsynth).

Here's the exact problem:

I got the beginning synced perfectly (mixing my MP3 with the soundless video), but then the audio and video went out of sync about 25% of the way through the mix. I then got it synced properly at the 50% mark, but everything was out of sync at the beginning and the end of the mix.

That led me to think that the problem was playback using DirectMusic vs S-YXG50... meaning there ain't much that I could do about that.

Heh, I emailed the author of MIDIJam asking him about output devices:

Yeah, I'm using DirectMusic, and can't find a way to pump it out to any other output. 🙁 Maybe someday I'll try it with a newer version of DirectMusic, and see what that does for it.

so even if you changed the midimapper to use MPU-401, it'll still use the shitty MS/roland soft synth?

Yep yep, unfortunately MIDIJam TOTALLY ignores what is set in the WinDoZe MIDI Mapper, and is hardwired to use DirectMusic 🙁

Damned shame, as that MIDI player is EXTREMELY cool looking! ...and yes, I play quite a few of "real-world" instruments as well (not just MIDI stuff <grin>), and it follows a lot of the real instruments pretty good; or at least, fairly close 😀

(edit) Man! There has just *GOT* to be some sort of DirectMusic (maybe "DMLoader.dll") hex-edit/hack than can force DirectMusic-played MIDI data to be piped to another MIDI device!

Hehe, yet SOOO fun to strum 😀

Anyhow, we SURELY need a hex-edit/hack/edit for DirectMusic to allow changing MIDI devices. Someone somewhere must have done something like that, but good luck with Googling "directmusic hack midi device" 🤣!
