Couldn't sleep so I decided I'd pop in a DVD and then another until I found a working one. Turns out that, apparently, the ONLY DVD in my collection that this computer will play is "Killer Tomatoes Strike Back." This computer hates me.

What DVD software are you using?

Try Media Player Classic or VLC, I believe the have DVD playback capability.

Oh I see...

Well, at least DVDRW drives are quite cheap these days. And 2nd hand ones go for next to nothing.

Unless it's a notebook...

Nah, you'll usually get a pop-up with the error message if it's a region "problem".
Could be his drive is either dusty or dying, but like Maulwurf said, DVD drives are easy and cheap to come by.
Just 2 weeks ago I bought 3 second hand DVD drives for just €1,50 each, untested! 😁 😜

Could be a weak laser and only reading SL (single layer) discs. Before banishing it though pop it open and clean the laser with a q-tip softly to get any dust out the way.

Back when I fixed and installed lasers in DVD players, if I didn't calibrate the the pattern properly then DL discs usually were unreadable.
