RG100's thread about the Radeon 9800 got me searching the net for the best (cheap 😁) graphics card aftermarket coolers, and I bumped into the same problems I had in previous searches:
*Often it is unstated whether a cooler will work with an AGP card
*Often the compatibility lists are outdated, or missing altogether
*Often the cooler is not silent

I know about a couple aftermarket coolers like the large passive Accelero, but is there any good source which has a lot of the relevant data in one place?
Or does anyone here have better knowledge about the subject then I do?

hi

i have used a zalman vf700-cu on two cards one being
an AGP ti-4200-8x and another being a PCI-E 6600GT
and recommend it for ease of mounting and quiet
operation and it looks good too.

their pdf manual has the following compatibility info:

ATI Radeon 9 *** Series NVIDIA Geforce4 Ti 4 *** Series NVIDIA Geforce 6800 LE Series
ATI Radeon X *** Series NVIDIA Geforce FX 5700(Ultra) Series NVIDIA Geforce 6800 Series
NVIDIA Geforce4 MX Series NVIDIA Geforce FX 5800 Series NVIDIA Geforce 6800 GT Series
NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200 NVIDIA Geforce FX 5900 Series NVIDIA Geforce 6800 Ultra Series
NVIDIA Geforce FX 5500 NVIDIA Geforce FX 5950 Series NVIDIA Geforce 6800 Ultra Extreme
NVIDIA Geforce FX 5600(FX 5700) NVIDIA Geforce 6600 Series

The manual can be found on this page:

Zalman and Arctic Cooling are the main companies.

Googling a picture search for a model of a video card + zalman or arctic cooling should quickly give you results.

e.g. radeon 9700 zalman

For a while Arctic Cooling made this VGA Silencer products. IMO they are fantastic, but it was pointed out to me in this forum that the bearings didn't last that long, or something along those lines.

For its day, the VGA SILENCER was the best thing since sliced bread for coolers. I had one on my 9250 and i put it on my 9600se.

I've also used a Zalman VF-900CU http://www.zalman.com/ENG/product/Product_Read.asp?idx=145 It diddnt fit on my 9800 pro AIW but it was because of the AIW part.

But if you want period correct, the vga silencer is the way to go.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Period correct is not what I'm after really, and thanks for the recommendations! 😉

I'll continue my search...

Define "cheap" ? 🤑

I bought a handful of those Accelero's myself(10 Euro each some time ago), for any retro use. S2, not the S1.

http://cgi.ebay.de/OVP-VGA-Passivkuhler-Accel … g-/170632637048

I.e. GForce 4 and below, perhaps for non ultra 5's and even an 6600.
Haven't tested it yet, but should probably even fit TNT2 Ultra or older ?

As for comprehensive tests, I dunno... should be some older period specific ones though - but I guess most of them coolers are not available new/for sale.

If you search for "vga" + "cooling" in the google window (tick 'SPCR'), there should be plenty older reviews here though:
http://www.silentpcreview.com/section11.html

Or just pick some of the 'relevant' links at the bottom of the last page of each review...

But if you want new coolers on older cards, that would be tougher to find any relevant info on. Probably best source would be... VOGONS, heh 🤣
GeForce 3

Not quite sure what exactly you're after(fan or fanless/for very hot cards or normal ones?), but hope some of this info could be useful ?

Thanks for the 2 links, but they ship to UK and Germany only.

And with cheap I mean the value of a cooler you buy for a graphics card you're not going to be using very often.

if you want cheap....

I have a pair of these cooling my 3dfx voodoo 5-5500. Took a little modding to get the both to fit... You also need to order at least 1 or 2 extra, because they send them in a bubble envelope that usually smashes at least one. 😜

Thanks for the 2 links, but they ship to UK and Germany only.

But I think that UK site will ship 'overseas', just ask them ?
(in auction: crtl+F, 'overseas customers' etc, if sub2kg)
Still, far from (dirt) cheap - but compared to the other current BiN offerings, it looks like a bargain.

And I wouldn't be surprised if that German seller would be open for Dutch business if you asked ? 😀
(though no paypal option there - only banktransfer)

Still not sure how much you consider cheap though ($/£/€ = ?), but if you're rarely gonna use the card, then that $0.99 one in the post above sounds like the best option so far?
(if it fits, that is)
