Hi, I have a computer with an sb16 and I was wondering what games do you suggest I play to get the full advantage of the sb, I'm also looking for the fun factor also.

If you're refering to OPL FM synthesis:

The oldie "Cybersphere" without a doubt -> http://www.classicdosgames.com/game/Cybersphere.html . Pretty amazing stuff what that guy did with the OPL3 😀

Another good one is Brix -> http://www.classicdosgames.com/game/Brix.html (as well as Brix 2 Deluxe). Those two used the old Creative Labs' "CMF" (Creative Music Format) for their FM music.

Lastly, the old arcade shooter Tyrian -> http://www.classicdosgames.com/game/Tyrian_2000.html . Although it sounds MUCH better in GM mode, it's music sounds rather neat in SBPro mode.

(edit) Heh, and "Jill of the Jungle" as well -> http://www.classicdosgames.com/game/Jill_of_the_Jungle.html ... like Brix above, all CMF music files. "OMINOUS.CMF" is especially neat sounding 😀

P.S. You can play CMF files with the files in the attached ZIP 😀

First run "SBFMDRV.COM" to load the Creative Labs CMF FM driver, then:

PLAYCMF.EXE filename.CMF

(edit) Just forgot another that used CMF format music files, "Traffic Department 2192" -> http://www.classicdosgames.com/game/Traffic_D … tment_2192.html , although I never really cared for the game's music that much.

Heh. I remember Brix for having astonishingly high-quality PC speaker sound effects. (Or maybe they just seemed better than they were when paired with the graphics.)

Yep, Brix (and Brix 2 Deluxe) had some pretty nice sounding PC speaker sound effects, as far as PC speaker sound effects go 😀

Brix 1 and 2 was my *second* reason for eventually discovering DOSBox (the first being DOOM), after builidng up my current Windows XP rig 😀

Megarace has a few catchy synth tunes and can be obtained on gog.com along with the second Megarace game for $6.

If you want a variety, Doom, Doom 2, Ken's Labyrinth, Rise of The Triad and the first Descent game (not the second one) all have HUGE varieties of MIDI tunes, many of which sound OK over FM synth.

Or if you want to hear something technically impressive, Earthsiege uses a combination of synth AND digitized sounds for its music, with its setup program's tune really stealing the show.

And then of course there's Cybersphere and Cyberpshere Plus which are nothing but synth music and sound and are perhaps the best examples of what can be done with the OPL3 chipset present on most Sound Blaster cards.

However, if you're trying to compare the difference between a Sound Blaster 16 and an earlier card like a Sound Blaster 2.0, the only major difference is bit-depth, as the Sound Blaster 16 can actually output 16-bit sound (hence the name) allowing for more accurate sound production in games which recorded their sound effects at a 16-bit level. TBH, noticing the difference between 8-bit and 16-bit sound is rather hard.

Man! There ya go again, Gemini000... MAKING/FORCING me to go digging through all of this mess of CDROMs/floppies so's I can hear the Earthsiege tune 🤣! 😀

(edit) Installed Earthsiege from my CDROM... I totally forgot how cool that soundtrack was; with the synth and digital combo 😀 I had forgotten that they used digital sounds for the percussion, and synth for the rest of the instruments in the MIDI soundtrack.

Hmmm... that kick and snare is especially nice... I'm thinking "SoundFont Conversion" <grin> 😀

You'll notice that about the other Epic Megagames too in Kiloblaster, Xargon, Jill of the Jungle, Brix, Solar Winds, but strangely, NOT Overkill. (That uses some custom adlib raw data format of its own also used in Lemmings)

I think Heros (sic) might use CMF too, not sure.
