For some reason these chips appear a LOT harder to find then I'd expect for a chip that is so well known. Even on cpu-world they hardly ever appear and it's strange to me that chips like Cyrix MII and Winchip seem to be more common then the K6-3.

Soooo, it got me thinking...how many of these K6-III parts are actually floating around here amongst other Vogons members? Could you all please list them?

I'll start:
In all my times of collecting, I managed to find a whopping ONE pieces of this chip!

Part number:
K6-III/400 AFR (desktop 2.2v 400Mhz)

Thanks!

For the record, I'm talking about K6-III classic/desktop part, not the K6-3+ mobile parts which seem to be more common then raindrops 😁

(changed the title)

Edit:
Total count so far for K6-III non-plus on Vogons:7 (possibly 😎
Tetrium - K6-III/400 AFR 2.2V
5u3 - K6-III/450 AFX 2.4V
batracio - K6-III/400 AHX 2.4V
batracio - K6-III/400 AHX 2.4V
ratfink - K6-III/400 AHX 2.4V
ratfink - K6-III/450 AFX 2.2V
sklawz - K6-III/450 AHX 2.4V
ratfink - K6-III/450?

Wait, pen III?

No, K6-III.

Heres a couple examples:

Edit:It's the top 2, the bottom 2 are the + variety again, which are more common

That's the one.

So dosquest, you happen to actually "have" one of those?

Years ago I had a K6-III 400MHz 2.4V AHX chip - it died in an heroic attempt to reach 500 MHz (83x6) on a TX-97E board. Avoid this model if possible.

Nowadays I just use one of those cheap K6-3+ 400MHz ATZ CPUs, but since my backup board (P5A rev. 1.06) doesn't play nice with the mobile chips, I'm also keeping a K6-III 450MHz 2.2V AFX. Both of these will do 550 MHz without a hitch.

Edit: Corrected part number for my CPU.

Nope 😜

I'm wanting to see how many others here have the actual K6-III desktop variety.
The K6-III+ is all over the place, but the normal K6-III seems impossible to find!

I have two K6-III/400 AHX 2.4V, and despite what 5u3 said, I would not recommend to avoid this model if you can find it, because this CPU worked like a charm on my Asus TX-97E. Note that I had it running at 400 MHz (6x66) and 2.2V without any stability issue due to undervolting. I used that machine mainly for MAME, and believe me that the K6-III CPU ran pretty cold.

Now I'm using one of them on a VIA MVP3 motherboard, I planned to make it a Windows 2000 printer/network server, but now it's just another of my never finished projects.

I think I have a 400 and a 450, k6/3 non-plus's, one of them running in a ga5ax. Will check later. Also have a + or two so I could be confused.

Edit: It's a k6/3 450 model 9 in my ga5ax system.

Cheers, if it's not too much trouble 😉

I'll keep updating the list so I get a semi-complete picture of what's floating around here regarding K6-III 😀

Ok I have these:

K6/3 450 AFX
K6/3 400 AHX
K6/3+ 400 ATZ

and what cpuid reports as a k6/3 450 model 9 in my ga5ax system, which seems to mean it's a non-plus. Which makes me non-plussed *groan* as I didn't think I had 3 non-plus cpu's. Could it be reporting wrong somehow?

Dunno. Personally I believe in the mark-1 eyeball approach. Software can tell so many things but having the thing in your hand and looking at it with your own eye is always the best solution in my opinion 😉

hi

i have an AMD-K6-III/450AHX 2.4V CORE/3.3V I/O
here in an ECS p5vp-a+ which I know works but
i have never got around to setting up.

this picture comes complete with hair unfortunately:

k63k.th.jpg

there is also some kind of k6 in a cobalt raq4 i have
which is currently in use as a rack shelf that also
works but is never ever turned on. perhaps i
will open it up one day and see 😀

bye!
