I'm just curious, but recently I saw someone make a post in a very old thread that was relevant to the topic of the thread and it got locked down for being a thread necro. Everytime someone asks a question in a new thread that's been covered already they are always told to do a search before opening a new thread on the same subject. Does it make sense, then, that when someone does take the time to search for an existing thread on that topic that they should get shut down and forced to start a new thread anyway?

Use old threads for information on your problem not for posting issues you are having yourself.

Like DOSFreak says, first check if your problem is fully covered in another thread (95% of the questions certainly are)
and otherwise create a new thread with full information about the problem and all things attempted up to now.
