I have around 15 spare drives, mostly from scavenging, but most of em are not working very well, I'll have to learn how to refurbish them properly at some point, when they really get too rare. I was reading about head alignment lately.

I wish CF > IDE adapters would be hot-swappable Happy

Now that would be practical 😁

when you think about it, it's pretty amazing that no device has managed to completely supplant the floppy disk in all aspects. USB flash drives are fine and get the job done, but they don't quite fill the same niche - way over the ~$1 price range, and no universal low-level (BIOS level) support.

Really? It's pretty universal these days. As recently as Core 2 Duo it was a bit hit-and-miss, but all of my "new" computers can do it flawlessly.

I don't know about ~$1, but you can get a decent quality 4GB drive for less than a fiver, I think that's reasonable for something you use the same way as carrying around floppies.

Obviously USB drives are no good for older computers, but contemporary USB drives were small and expensive anyway.

And all the modern BIOS support flashing from USB. Easy BIOS flashing was one of the reasons why I hung on to Floppy drives for quite some time (I don't like flashing in Windows) and now that is also resolved.

I think USB flash drives are awesome and getting cheaper all the time.

So how many of that thing required to render today's 3D graphics in real-time?

I am finding it hard to get floppy drives these days.

A few years ago most PC stores would still sell them. Now they only sell the USB drives.

A bit pricey, but I like the idea:

The problem with those is they usually use the floppy drive connector so access is at floppy speeds.
