Recently i released public version of mine latest project - graphic card history tree. Want to have there all pc graphic chips makers and maybe some nonpc too (ixmicro...). So far are there all big chip makers and slowly working on less known ones.
If some of you folks know any missing chip there or any missing info (mem size and year), let me know pls in this thread or use comments under article. Mem size is there maximum supported by chip, even if they never used that amount of memory (im looking into datasheets or release PR news). Will be happy ofc also for whole new companys trees (name of company, list of chips with year and mem sizes), but don't think that someone will be crazy like me and spend hours on google searching for 80s cards 😁

Article is here

http://www.vgamuseum.info/index.php/history-tree

Direct link on image is in article, i wont post it here since picture have 3,8MB and 9800x47000 resolution - its just too big.

Smaller image (reduced resolution and colors) is here - http://www.vgamuseum.info/images/doc/historysm.png

Edit: Suggested company and chipsets list:
Matrox - pre 94 Impression, MGA 108, HiPerPlus - have no prove that they using matrox chipsets - need more info
Plantronics - ColorPlus card - need more info, no photos found

Already added chips:
AccelGraphics - AG300/AG500
AMD - AM95C60
Cornerstone - ImageAccel
Artist Graphics - 3GA/GPX
Cornerstone - ImageAccel
Dynamic Pictures - Oxygen Series
Hitachi - 63484
Intergraph - RealiZm series
NEC - 7220
Real3D, Bitboys
SGI - IrisVision and Cobalt

------------------------------

Also, working on CPU history tree now too.
It is located here: http://www.vgamuseum.info/index.php/cpu

Any corrections and info about missing CPU's are welcome.

Headland is on mine to do list. But never heard about Raytheon - any better info or list of cards? Wiki says that they do military stuff.

They did some stuff but Intel bought out their graphics division and the work that Raytheon did resulted in the i740.

It wasn't Raytheon, it was Lockheed Martin.

That would be REAL3D.

According to wiki no real chip for pc was ever made, so no space for real3d 😁

[EOCF] Tim/Timber/etc. had a (prototype? limited release?) card if I recall correctly.

[EDIT] Yep

I miss that guy's website sorely.

Then you need to look up the wiki entry for i740 to see the history of the chip. Intel did not develop it, they bought it.

for such large .png, how about using Ken Silverman's PNGOUT ?
The command line version is free.

Ralf Brown's Interrupt list also have some vintage graphics cards mentioned in its INT 10h sections.

Well it doesn't change fact that 740 was made and sold under intel mark. And real3d seems to had only prototypes, which never made it to market (and this posted one looks very different from i740). Its same as Bitboys - maybe add them as last companys with all products grayed out as never released - so we will have info about real bad luckers companys.

Little info : http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=52627

Ken Silvermans thing is horribly slow.
This one is much much better: http://psydk.org/PngOptimizer.php

No effect - optimized from 4029169 bytes to 4016109 bytes (99% of original size)

A bit off topic, but, it didn't work because you have too much anti alising in that file. But trust me, this program is effective from 30% to 50% on images.
I use it to reduce the size of my Adobe Illustrator PNG out puts.

for PNG optimizations PNGCRUSH works well enough for me. And by the way, this image is still fully readable when scaled down to 50%.

Back on topic - I see no obvious early '80s stuff like Hercules or Plantronics? Could send them in if I find the time, though I guess the info should be readily available :)

Continued off-topic: 3921362 bytes on optipng default settings.
http://optipng.sourceforge.net
(Later, I'll try optipng -o7 and pngout 😀 )

[EDIT] PNGOUT cannot compress further.

[EDIT2] optipng -07 cannot compress further. 😁

Great list. Suggested additions:

  • Intergraph (RealiZm series)
    Dynamic Pictures (Oxygen Series)
    AccelGraphics (AG300/AG500)
    Artist Graphics (3GA/GPX)
Early Matrox (pre 94 Impression, MGA 108, HiPerPlus)
SGI (if you want only PC graphics, then the two are IrisVision and Cobalt)
    Cornerstone ImageAccel

What program did you use to create this image?

Well this is list of graphic chips makers, not graphic cards. And don't know any chip made by hercules. Well dunno about hercules color card (never seen any photo), but 1st models were based on motorola 6845 or clones and later they were using also other makers chips (intel for example).

btw never heard about Plantronics (dont do they headphones now?).

And any info is ofc welcome. There's not yet plenty of small companys. It take usually a lot of time to add them, since searching any info is hard.

Program is VUE - free one - http://vue.tufts.edu/

Nice list but will be hard searching for info, since all of em are profi cards. And they usually dont release name of used chipsets - i guess i have to use name of cards....
BTW don't know any info source about early matrox - you do? As far as i know matrox were using chips from other chips makers - s3 in early 90's for example. And its hard to find out even card list.

I'm pretty sure matrox made their own chips... Matrox has been around since the s-100 days http://www.s100computers.com/Hardware%20Folde … T256/ALT256.htm

if you look, that board is dated 1977.
