Ok, I was wondering about this app in the appstore Hexan yes it's free, and it looks like a port of a build game, but if you extract the ipa go to payload, then hacx.app and open base you will notice something interesting.. inside you will find 3 .WAD files, doom2.wad, the base HACX.wad and then prboom.wad. It was my understanding that the copyright (and general rights) were still in effect for the actual original wad files and only the engine was open source. Which means this app is violating the copyrights of ID software. Am I wrong or right on this assumption?

Upon further inspection, the PRboom.wad is just an empty wad file, meaning if you load it in doom95, select tnt then the "prboom.wad" file it would just play tnt and so on., which makes me wonder what the doom2.wad is..

Doom isn't just a game, it's an apocalypse survival simulator.

Adding insult to injuriy, they took another map without proper credit http://www.doomwadstation.com/hacx/hacx.html.

You'll learn there's a lot of shadiness in the mobile app market regarding a misunderstanding of what freely licensed source code allows.

Apple shouldn't allow it either! They have a stance against GPL licensed stuff, so PRBoom doesn't even belong there. Also, the source code isn't even available.

Furthermore, Hacx is still Banjo Software intellectual property and is still copyrighted, so they are also getting violated.

He also sells Freedoom without any indication that it is Freedoom.

A similar thing happened with Abuse. Some person made their own port of the game for mobile phones, and of course the license holders took issue, but Apple wasn't prepared to remove it from their app store, so the license holders developed their OWN official port, and after getting that up, Apple eventually took down the unlicensed port.

Mobile app stores have virtually the opposite policy regarding copyrighted material compared to video sharing services like YouTube, in that their policies suck due to some kind of mentality that ripping off some other piece of software would be too much effort. Truth be told, it's much easier to port an old DOS game than one might think... :P

Strange, the page for the original hacx wad seems to be down, on the doom wad site, I will try to find a cached version.

This is freaky, the wad site now seems to of pulled all wad files and it says at the bottom "This page was updated on 31-Aug-12" 0-o
Update: They pulled the hacx from their server and replaced it with the officially hosted hacx site

@thelazy1 eeeh, it's gone through multiple versions, so I don't think you can blatantly miss the files.

Apple has a clause in the ToS that prevents you from re-distributing or modifying software you receive from the App Store, while the GPL requires that people are allowed to do that.

So it's not really Apple taking a stance, as much as simply making sure they're not complicit in violating any licences on software they distribute.

That's because they can't control redistribution or modification of GPL licensed stuff. It knocks great big holes in their walled garden. If you see anything in the app store that is covered under GPL then you should report it to the authors of the code because they can't change the terms of the license by forbidding anything the GPL specifically allows.
