April Fool?

How is this an April Fools' joke?

A bit interesting, but nothing special.

a while ago I ran into this research paper about teaching a computer to play Digger (more oldskool PC scene points for that, I guess).

I don't say that it has to be one, and I'm not convinced that it is one, but I saw pretty strong signs:
- The Youtube video was uploaded on April 1st
- The PDF linked from the video description is dated April 1st
- The PDF has a pretty serious style (generated from LaTeX I'd say) but has some definitely not serious expressions/sentences, starting with the first sentence "The Nintendo Entertainment System is probably the best video game console, citation not needed."

And source code without analyzing it myself is no proof that this is not an April Fools' joke. I distinctly remember typing a program from a PC magazine into a PC just to learn that it was an April Fools' joke joke when running it. In this case I'd first have to compile the stuff to see what it does.

After reading the paper I think this is probably for real, although written very much tongue in cheek.
