Actually, a good example of a great AI in theory are the Endermen in Minecraft. :o

Notch's original idea for them was that they would be these scary, tall things that walk around mysteriously, and that looking straight at them would cause them to suddenly freak out. If you then stopped looking at them they would teleport towards you and try to kill you.

Very neat idea... in theory...

In practice, what ended up happening was that to beat an Enderman, all you had to do was just keep staring at it, walk up to it, and just smash away with your weapon since it would be stuck in freak-out mode. Even Notch himself admitted they were pretty nerfed not long after their addition. To compensate, the Endermen were made twice as powerful and are now able to teleport even while freaking out so that they don't get locked in place, but despite these alterations they never really had the intended "scare" effect. If they existed and worked this way in REAL LIFE, that would've been something else entirely, but in a game world it just doesn't work that way. :P
