I'm buying the following wheel potentiometer to add a volume control to a laptop with only a pc speaker. I have a simple hand drill but is there a better way to create the rectangular slot for it to fit into?
I'm not sure what a good resistance would be so I'm buying one 200 ohm and and 1k ohm as well.
The usual way to do it would be to drill some holes side-by-side, as close together as you can to make the rough opening, then square up the edges with some small files.
But depending on how thick the plastic is (at least I'm assuming you're just going through plastic), you may be able to cut it out with an Xacto knife.
Definitely practice on some junk first though, if you can... regardless of which method you choose, it's gonna be kinda tedious to do an opening that small.
I just realized that there is an "Fn" combination for the pc speaker. Yes, I have indeed owned this laptop all my life. 🤣
