I have a Midiman MM-401 which is non-operational. It produces no sound and one of the chips (74HC74AP) gets extremely hot to the touch. Might it be just this chip that's bad and an easy repair?

I have basic soldering skills but no technical knowledge about engineering.

A high-res picture (or scan) of the card would be helpful.

One chip getting hot does not necessarily mean it's broken, something else could be broken and pulling too much current from it.
Have you checked for visually damaged traces, components, etc?

A 74HC74 should not get hot. Question is, is it the IC itself or is one of its outputs shorted. That also causes them to heat up. Guess you should try to replace the IC first...
