I know that when you get a videocard from a new generation you should re-install the drivers. And there's something to be said for doing it too when switching from a budget to high-end card within the same generation. But what if you're switching out, for example, a Riva TNT 2 16MiB for a 32MiB model? Or a Rage 128 16MiB for a 32MiB model? (Same type of memory in both cases)

Is it really neccessary in those cases to do the entire uninstall/re-install dance?
And what if the memory is different? (DRAM vs SDRAM or SDR-SDRAM vs SDR-SGRAM or SDR vs DDR)

Actually, with multi-generation drivers, do you really need to re-install them when switching between supported generations?

Has anyone ever tested this with benchmarks? To see if there is a difference between using the same driver-installation or re-installing them?
