What is the best matrix printer in terms of Build quality and Print quality?
I am looking at 1985 to 1995.
And also 1995 +

I currently have (found in the basement) an Fujitsu DX2200 (compatible with Epson FX 80 driver), but the ribbon is very weak.

I really like matrix printers and i think they would also be sufficient for any of my printing needs as well.

I have a panasonic kx-p1624 I've had since maybe 1994, they sell a few similar models new today, and ribbons are still available.

It has 24 pins for the print head, so its text is usually is clearer than the standard 9-pin models, it even has an (excruciatingly slow) 300dpi(or something like that) bitmap mode.

Has not much experience with many diferent ones, but during the times (1992-1996) I had a Citizen Swift 240. Many people around had Okis and Epsons, but not any one of them could beat it about quality and (especially) page control (i.e. very large printable area, starting from the very top o the page). Never had a chance to had them, but it has auto page loader and color printing options as upgrades..

Pretty much anything by Epson was what you wanted back in the 80's and 90's. All the major software packages had support for Epson FX/MX/LX series printers.

And all the others has printed in their manuals, which Epson or IBM printer theirs will emulate..😀 My Citizen was Epson LQ2500 compattible for example (If my memory serves me correctly).

Have you ever been in a super market? 😀
Also bet offices, invoices printing, exchange offices, ticked offices. Anywhere you need a lot of printing with simple characters.

Yes, never seen a Matrix printer in use for over ten years. All laser printed now, atleast in Norway.

Thermal printer is pretty much the same thing when you take a look at it. Plus you live in a country that has a lot of money.
Here Matrix printers are used in Post offices, train/bus stations, bet offices, almost everywhere.
Cheap to keep operational and last 10+ years.

I worked at a supermarket for a while. All of the printing was done by laser printers, or inkjets whenever color was needed. Now, I think I've seen a dot matrix printer at one of the banks here, but I may just be remembering something from a few years back.

Anyway, it's pretty cool that they're still being used in other places. I thought they were completely obsolete, but I guess I'm wrong.

EDIT: Actually, if you count the receipts that were printed off, those were done by thermal printers. I remember having to replace the spools virtually every day, and how tedious it was to find the beginning of the paper so that it would feed through properly. I usually just ended up ripping at an edge and starting from there. 🤣

I had an Amstrad DMP-3000 9-pin dot mattrix printer. Worst printer ever made. Slow and noisy. Built for last a long time though.

I didn't even think they made dot matrix printer ribbons or paper anymore. How would a person use one in 2014?

Anything required to be printed with carbon copies, requires one. Like invoices. So you are somehow right, it's not "persons" mostly, it's "businesses". 😈
