I recently installed Civilization: Call to Power on one of my Windows 98 machines, and with it came something called DirectX Media. After the install, I found that Windows Media Player 9 would no longer launch. It told me I needed to reinstall, which I tried, and the installer repeatedly fails when registering the file c:\windows\system\wmp.dll. Now I can't use Windows Media Player anymore. Lovely.

Is there a simple fix for this, or do I need to reinstall Windows to get everything back where it was? (I've been meaning to do this anyway - no biggie.)

I've already uninstalled the offending game and deleted all registry references to wmp.dll.

Have you tried re-installing DX 8/9? (whatever the machine had on it previously)

Random guess: DX Media is fairly old/deprecated, and it may have installed a too-old version of DirectShow which is causing issues with WMP.
