While I was playing in some alternative universes of operating-systems, I was thinking of what kind Office of software I could use at home (for my normal not work related work). Confuse there is Microsoft Office, some older version like 97, 2002 or XP (at least some without the a Ribbon... who the hell invented that cr...).

A basic text and spreadsheet will do 80% of the work. Some database would be nice and maybe some dtp/presentation (not slideshow) software also. I still not sure what OS to use, so it could be windows 98, 2000 or XP. But I think it's going to be 2000 (somehow I like it)

So I found Corel Office, Lotus SmartSuite and StarOffice (from StarDivision). Already installed Corel, looks and feels fine. Smartsuite i only found the '96 version and somehow it won't run on my XP virtual test machine. (just installing 98 for testing). And was unable to find StarOffice other that the Oracle version.

Office suites based on Open Office or Java are not done, because they feel slow. Same is whit MS office 2007-2013... so slow... (i have 2010 on my business laptop whit I5 and 8 gig ram.... so slow... even SSD won't help).

Now is was wondering what other Office suites are there? Or maybe some individual software.

Are there people using other Office suites than Microsoft of Open Office and what do you feel about it?

/edit: Installed Lotus SmartSuit '96, this one feels strange, not that good as Corel Office 7 (both from 1996 according to google)

/edit: Found StarOffice 6 and 7 from SUN (2002 and 2003). Look and feel like MS Office 2002. Unfortunately it ask for JAVA, will ruin without, but than some functions are not working according the installation program.

Moved to "Milliways". This is a business suite discussion, not games discussion, so does not belong in "Windows" (which is short for "Windows Games").

I was a happy Office XP user for many years, and would probably still be using it if not for the Great Switch to Linux. Office XP has a no-nonsense user interface, solid feature set, and broad OS compatibility, and it behaves well on low-spec machines. I now use LibreOffice, which is more than capable of filling Office XP's shoes. LibreOffice certainly has a larger memory footprint, and support for older Windows versions was dropped some time ago. However, it runs well enough on any machine made in the last ~13 years, provided that the OS is supported.

If you're looking for older / more obscure office suites, I just found an awesome repository the other day

I'm sure I've got old versions of StarOffice 5.2a for OS/2, Windows and Linux on CD somewhere. It was more an integrated desktop unlike later versions.

You might also consider looking at Microsoft Works if you don't need or want the overhead required by the Visual BASIC for Applications/Visual BASIC support in Microsoft Office. As is the case with Microsoft Office, there are a number of versions spanning many years, so you can probably find one for whatever real or virtual OS environment you prefer. See this link for additional info on the suite:

Of course there's always BreadBox Ensemble http://www.breadbox.com/ or earlier GeoWorks versions. You don't even need Windows of any sort, just dos.

For just basic Windows stuff I normally slap on Abiword for word processing. Though support has for Windows has been dropped Gnumeric might do for basic spread sheets.

There was Windows versions of Koffice as well https://windows.kde.org/news.php

I got 2 versions of Star Office 4 now for 1 Euro each on evilbay. I will report when they are in.

Further more I decided to use Windows 2000 as OS. Will install MS Office 2002 on it for the time being.
