Got a PowerColor RedDragon V2 RX 470 for the media center PC in my living room. I pondered getting a cheaper card for months - something like a GTX 650, 750 or 950 but the benchmarks for those are really un-impressive and I wanted to be able to play games on at least 1080p / high (even tough the TV is 4k), so I went with the RX 470. It was pretty well priced too - right between the GTX 1050ti (witch I had the opportunity to test and is MUCH slower then the 470) and the 3GB 1060. Funny thing is I found older cards at around the same price point (190 euro) - like the R9 380x and the GTX 960. I did consider moving my GTX 1070 in to the media center to play at 4k, but it won't fit in the tiny inter-tech cube case (in fact this RX 470 only has 0.5 cm to spare - had to take the front of the case off to install the video card). Besides, I could just move my desktop to the living room if I wanted to play at 4k on a big-screen, but I most of the games I play are more suited to a desk, mouse and kb setup so I decided against it. Here are some pics:

^ that thing is my mobile test desk (it's tiny and has wheels). The only reason it has that huge 27" LG monitor / tv on it is because AMD did away with any form of analog output, and the 22" proview LCD I normally keep on that desk is VGA only 🙁

Just so you know, nvidia was late to the party but has also done away with analog output with pascal cards as well.

I know 🙁 My 1070 only has DVI-D, so no way of getting a VGA signal out of it (not that I'd want to on that particular card). This kind of pisses me off since I have a few decent wide-screen monitors that are VGA only - like said proview. Wierdly enough, all my 4:3 / 5:4 monitors support VGA, DVI and DVI-D (and even S-VIDEO / Composite in case of my syncmaster 214t)

The machine it sits in is built out off stuff I had lying around. A Phenom II X6 1035t (running at 3030Mhz with turbo left on for 3.6Ghz boosted clock) from my CPU collection, a AMD 760g based biostar micro-atx board (witch is oddly good at overclocking), 4GB of dual-channel A-Data Vitesta running at 1550Mhz (rated for 1600 CL9 @ 1.6v), a 60GB OCZ SSD, a 500GB WD Caviar Blue I took out of a dead laptop and a 450w 80+ enermax PSU.

In fact on AMD R9 390 (I have the XFX one) there is only 1 DVI the rest are just display ports. Since I am using it with 2 monitors I had to buy a display port to DVI cable. I have a feeling even the one DVI will eventually (soon) disappear.

The 470 and the GTX 1070 only have DVI-D - a DVI to VGA atapter won't fit in since the 4 analog pins required for analog signal are "filled in" 🙁

My R9 280x still has regular DVI, and DVI to VGA converters work perfectly.

I was in the same situation with the nVidia GTX 1060 - two VGA/DVI monitors, but only one DVI connector on the graphics card. My solution was to move the smaller monitor to the onboard Intel HD. At first, this did not work. I had to go into the motherboard BIOS and make integrated graphics "Primary" so it boots up with it, then activates the GTX 1060 when the OS loads. Works perfectly! Gaming happens exclusively on the bigger monitor connected to the GTX 1060, and dragging windows between screens works seemlessly.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

Unfortunately the RX 470 isn't stable on the old Biostar 760G board under windows 10 anniversary eddition. I tested doom witch ran surprisingly well at 1080p / ultra / FXAA 1x (~110-120 fps), and played for a couple of hours w/o issues - then tried WoW, witch also ran great, then tried world of tansk... crash to desktop. Tried it again after installing DX 2010 redist + some other stuff - crash to desktop withing the first 4 mins of a match. Turns out there's and issue with the RX series cards, win 10 anniversary and older AM3 (non+) amd boards, some intel boards too - like old LGA775 P35/P45 stuff. Some are complaining about X58 LGA1366 machines as well.

I put the 470 in my "guest gaming PC" witch has a Phenom II X6 1090T running at 3.8GHz on an Asrock 970 PRO3, and it runs like a champ. That machine has win 8.1 tough since warhammer 40k and some other games flat-out refuse to run properly (or at all) on windows 10 - especially unpatched GFWL games. Got 8122 pts in 3dmark 01 fire strike witch is a very good score, considering my 1070 + 3770k gets about 11500, and the 1070 cost over twice as much as the RX 470. The R9 280x that was in there is gonna go in my sister's boyfiend's machine, and I'ma knick his 7870 to stick in my media center instead of the RX.

If anyone is curious about real world performance of the RX 470 (not that edited, biased, payed for bullshit you find online) let me know. If I have the game, I'll bench it.

Something must be wrong with you GTX 1070 then... 11500 in Firestrike is way to low. I just got mine and it scores over 16k. http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/17490251

FYI you're using a 6-core hyper-threaded xeon, and they're using a 3770k as said, which is 4 cores with HT. Firestrike considers the physics portion as part of the computed result numbers and a 6-core intel xeon chip is going to out-perform any 4-core chip @ physics test. Just by Sheer core numbers. 11.5k for a 3770k is about on-par and average, neither excessively poor nor excessively above average.

^This. The physics test in fire strike makes up quite a bit of the score. I ran the test now to see what my machine gets - here's the result:

I think before I quoted the result my old i5 2500k + GTX 970 got (a little over 11k)... Anyway I'm fairly confident I can come close to your result by setting the power limit on my video card to 120% in MSI afterburner (it boosts to ~1911MHz that way - and stays there) and overclocking my CPU to 4.5GHz (the above result was obtained with the CPU @ stock), but too lazy, and I don't need that much CPU power on this machine. Kind of curious what my 1070 would get if I were to stick it in my dual Xeon HP Z800 (2x X5680)

bZmpyB8l.jpg

Maybe I'll give it a go one day. Until then, I found a bench where I ran the CPU at 4GHz:

P.S. that gaiward pheonix is a huge motha' - if I had that in my case it would be suffocated by my sound card (forced to use it - on board card causes BSODs in win 10 because reasons). Does the 1070 even need that much cooling? Mine never goes over 72C (but it sucks air directly from outside the case trought the dust filter)

Yeah, 13650 points sounds good for stock 3770k.

Gainward Phoenix is one of the cheapest GTX 1070 here... and also considered the quietest. 3-slot hestsink is overkill for it but at full load it is running at 68°C / 800 rpm top which is great (and my case isn't ventilated very well). Now I must get some decent PSU as this OEM Seasonic is very loud when power consumptions reaches 300W or more. 😒

Btw - soundcard isn't a problem in my rig. It fits nicely in the first pci-e x16 (and VGA in second)... is is kinda waste but LGA2011 has enough pci-e lanes, I can afford this. 🤣 As the board is mATX, there isnt many more options anyway - IIRC there is x1 slot just above the VGA but it would be too hot in there which is unneccessary.

yeah asrock moved the first 16x slot in place of that solitary 1x slot to make room for... another two 16x slots on my board, one of them being 8x electrically and the other 4x (regardless they both run at 4x when using a second card) so I'm more or less forced to use the bottom most 16x slot for the sound card... it's still a good 4-5cm away from the video card, but it kind of ruins my view 😜

BTW I love gainward and palit cards. With the exception of a bad bach of 970's from palit, I've never actually seen a dead card from these two manufacturers. The cards are cheap and offer tons of features, so I go for them when they are available. Lots of cards in my collection are made by either gainward or palit, with PC Partner (mother company) cards as old ET4000ax still kicking.

I bought yet another Asus P6T Deluxe today, you can never get too many of these as they will last forever like Paladins. Do they even build motherboards with this kind of over-engineering anymore?

The price was ~37 Euro + 6 euro shipping (it was on a Swedish Ebay clone site).

Many motherboards are significantly over-engineered. In fact the P6T Deluxe isn't even really that far into the category when you compare it to like the Asus ROG Crosshair series, Or the Asus CrossHair III Extreme series are some of the top contenders for that. The EVGA Classified x58 boards And EVGA's SR-2 also almost take the cake for "extremely over-engineered" systems, both are waaaaay more advanced than anything from the P6T series for 1366 computers.

Well non of those are really new! 😁

As an owner of three EVGA SR-2 motherboards and one X58 Classified 3X SLI I have to say that the P6T Deluxe (not the vanilla) is just as well built both when it comes to board quality / components and power circuitry. The EVGA BIOS is better though as you need a modified BIOS to be able to use turbo multipliers during heavy load when doing serious overclocking with the P6T Deluxe. This is not that much of an issue with a CPU that has a default multiplier of 22x or better as the P6T series can do 215 - 220 BCLK (YMMV).
