Using xeons on these types of motherboards, you wouldn't even need nor use more than half of the design / reason for having HEDT boards.

Usually better overclocking boards are more stable and longer lasting. That's what I care about.

These Xeons are the same as LGA 2011 i7 OC wise. Multiplier really shouldn't depend on board used. I have E5-1650 V1 here, works easily up to 4.5 GHz on two X79 boards (MSI and Asus). The maximum (somewhat stable) is 4.9 GHz http://hwbot.org/submission/3396129_havli_3dm … 970_36801_marks It is possible to boot at 50x, but unstable.

I've used this CPU in my main rig for a year or so overclocked to 4.3 GHz and everything worked just fine. Of course for todays standards it is rather slow... and upgrading to 7700k boosted my fps nicely.

Got a a Asus Rampage ii Gene for peanuts with a i7-920 on it's last legs. Was a D0 stepping so my guess it got the crap OC'd out of it on the included stock HSF. $20 x5650 and a Hyper 212 took care of those issues, the performance increase over my FX-8350 is noticable

Main pc: Asus ROG 17. R9 5900HX, RTX 3070m, 16gb ddr4 3200, 1tb NVME.
Retro PC: Soyo P4S Dragon, 3gb ddr 266, 120gb Maxtor, Geforce Fx 5950 Ultra, SB Live! 5.1

Curious, how did you conclude it was the CPU on its last legs and not the mobo at fault (short of buying another CPU)?

CPU could have ran fine at stock speeds but not with any OC, May have needed more volts to run at stock speeds, he may have been able to dump the clock multi and keep the QPI/fsb up.

Yeah, this was the reason, why I went for Skylake (and keep old DDR3L RAM modules) in my current main PC, when I was upgrading early this year. I do plan to go to Ryzen in the future, but not before RAM prices will drop at least a little bit.

I had 6-core SB-E (IB-E is pretty much the same) and upgrading that to 7700k was like a night and day. 8700K would crush old 2011 even in non-AVX MT friendly applications.

8700k would cost me 100% more, and that's without MB and DDR4.
Also, I don't want to sell my X79 platform, because I have other plans for it.

Bottom line for me :
If it isn't 50% faster in everything, I'm OK with "poor man's 8700k".

Still, Vcore=1,25V @ 4,5GHz together with 22nm must mean something here (vs. 3930k).

I agree - old gen used CPU is always much better price/performance. But of course this must be at a cost of lower absolute performance. And for me this is unacceptable - I want to make good use of my 144 Hz LCD and for this kind of fps, strong gaming CPU is a must have. 😈
I also have other plans for my old X79 platform... but buying a new PC doesn't mean I have to sell the old one. 😀

It is not "they used" 😁 these test are all made by me, it is this Crysis scene https://abload.de/img/crysis_2017_06_25_11_wasxc.png (but different settings of course - it was 1920x1080, not sure what MSAA level, but also slower GPU - GTX 1070 at the time).

Power consumption is important for me, simply because more power = more heat = more noise. And especially in summer, the extra heat is not very comfortable. And while IB-E will be definitely better than SB-E in this aspect, all HEDT platforms in general are much more power hungry than their 115x counterpart. Mainly the idle and light load consumption is what bothers me quite a lot - this is how my PC spends the most of the time... and I don't like using so much power when doing "nothing". 🤣

Sorry just saw this today. Jade Falcon's response was right. Turbo Boost was actually unstable and the chip would only run properly at stock 2.6ghz with it disabled, before doing that Wolfenstein ii would only run on minimum settings with crazy frame drops and crash with a BSOD after about 15min of play time. Also the thermal paste on the cpu/heatsink was a rather burntish brown shade of grey and smelled bad when I first got it. Makes sense I got the combo for so cheap now.

Also holy crap is this Xeon a competent chip.

Hey, what hardware monitoring tool are you using? Is it Afterburner or a completely different utility?

Currently I also have a 7700k at 5ghz/3200c14/GTX1070 rig and I'm impressed by how speedy this setup is!

Yes, it is Afterburner + RTSS. But the lower block (memory, CPU, GPU power) is actually powered by hwinfo64. It can inject selected monitoring items to RTSS and display them in OSD.

This below... 3gb Ram, 32gb storage, NFC and a lot of other goodies included in a nice package.
I bought this, for the money I got for X-Mas. A nice upgrade from my Motorola G3 (1gb Ram, 8gb Storage)
It is not everyday, that I buy new electronics. A new phone every 2 to 3 year is fine with me.

Well, there is unwritten rule that everything "Core 2 era" and newer are too modern to be considered retro... so it goes here. 😀 But of course for todays standards even 5870 is far from modern HW.
