Just a thought. Xonotic is an open source FPS with decent enough graphics, yet still playable on 10 year old systems. It is very easy from within the game to spin up a server (eg, Vogons Xonotic server). If there's any interest maybe us Vogons members could have a Saturday night frag fest with one another. Whoever decides to host could name their player with their Vogons username so we all could easily find the server. I understand we're all over the world, so Saturday night to me might be Saturday or Sunday morning to you, but still, it might be fun if even a few of us can make it on any given meet up.

Nice of you to consider hosting. I take it you mean a dedicated server vs an ad-hoc one that one of us sets our own playing machine up as?

I work for a Cloud and Managed Hosting company. I have a demo account for limited personal use so I can spin up a virtual machine to run it. This is obviously assume we get enough interest.

FWIW it doesn't work on Windows 95 due to a D3D9.DLL dependency (for an OpenGL game).

also i quit playing it when it was nexuiz in 2008 because some of the clan members on the team were jerks and their changes still apply to xonotic

I would hope those changes would have no effect on a handful of Vogons members playing privately with one another. FWIW, I'd be playing on my XP machine.

Bringing up possible theft of SoundIdeas material allegedly hospitalized one of them (from the stress) causing me to get banned, since clan influence trumps contributor concerns about freedom. 🙄

A D3D9 renderer backend is present but isn't default. I'm sure a little LoadLibrary magic could fix this. It fixed my formerly-XP-requiring game to work on Windows 95 after all 😀

I could see why you'd have mixed feelings about playing. Well, if it ends up working out, your gameplay experience would be pretty valuable. 😀 I'm an utter amateur on this game, but it would be fun to get my butt kicked by the good folks on here.

Oh okay. D3D on a Quake Engine 1 deal sounds wrong to me, though doesn't Xonotic uses DarkPlaces? I didn't think DarkPlaces had a D3D backend I thought it was OpenGL and SoftRast only.

It looks like a few people have interest. That hardly seems enough for you to spin up a dedicated server, Rhuwyn. If interest doesn't grow, I might try next Saturday to just spin one up within my game, then post in this thread that "it's up" along with its name and see if anyone shows up. If not, we could at least say we tried. 😀

I tried it (for the first time in 8 years), they really haven't changed much from Nexuiz 2.6.2 and the "lesbian porn" player sounds/voice makes me sad, and some new soundideas infractions are taking place now which makes me sadder. And there seems to be a mandatory stats system that's default on (have to go into multiplayer->profile to opt-out) so that's totally not suspicious at all

i'm out of this one. 🙁

leileilol, do you have any other suggestions that would be free/open source, easy to get up and going, and flexible enough to run on low end and high end systems? It doesn't even have to be a FPS (though that seems to be an obvious genre for ease of participating).

That's hard to say since it would cross the line of self-promotion (which is not a line I intend to cross) and there's not really a lot of open source games out there that are even system flexible due to the interest of having the latest of libraries supported for the latest of Debians and the cleanest of codes

I mean, Sauerbraten isn't that much better (still suffers the hollow Cube-ish look and feel despite technology). Warsow just died (And only has niche competitive appeal). Alien Arena bundles sponsored adware (intentionally - not a Sourceforgeism). OpenArena is slow and weird looking. Freedoom(+odamex) is too SSG reliant. Transfusion hasn't updated in a decade

I installed it, logged on, and was killed by a pony. A pink pony. I think I'll give this one a miss.

Is this too much voodoo?

Huh? I've never seen a pink pony. 😳 Are we talking about the same game?
