Hmm, well, here's a mockup of what it might look like:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Bhlr_ … dit?usp=sharing

What do you think? Should the video card section be split into 2D and 3D?

Each column holds the hardware that was released in each year, organized by how good it was, from top to bottom. Subjective of course, might need some work.

I put a couple things in the 1992 slot to demonstrate.

Does it look good or is this not what we're looking for?

What about tabs for each year instead of all years on a single sheet? I like the top-down approach with the column headings though.

I like both ideas. If you want a smaller list (fewer, but more premium components from each year) then keenmaster486's layout would get you lots of info in an easily digestible form. If you decide you want to include more components, then Artex's suggestion would work better. Maybe a summary tab (dream system) like keenmaster486's, followed by detail tabs for each year, where more, still premium components are listed.

If we are all on-board with the summary sheet then I say let's start it. I personally don't care for it and would rather just do it by year on the tabs (like the one in my post). But let's hear from the rest of the folks.

The summary sheet was my idea...and it was just that, an idea. Nothing you all need to adhere to. 😀 Feel free to do it how you want. It will be very cool to crowd source this info, regardless of how you all decide to organize it.

Cheers!

We could all make different ones, if people are searching this, they will just have more of a variety to choose from some may like it organized differently.

Let's start with one and see where it goes. If it gets too chaotic then we can switch gears, but let's go with a simplistic approach first.

OK, so I made my sheet editable if you want to use it, but idk, maybe it should be hosted by the OP.

I added last 20Y of CPU/GPU to the table. I think I got everything right 😀
EDIT :
I corrected Pentium Pro/Pentium II 300MHz in 1997, added half of the Sound Cards between 1999 (Live!) and 2008 (Xonar Essence STX), and few HDD's in 2003-2009 period.

I added cpus from 1987-1996 and made a note on 1997.

edit: it should be noted that in some older DOS years, if you were to build the fastest system of that year, it would play speed sensitive games of that year too fast!

Alright, this is looking great! If I have some down time I'll do some research and start filling in the more monotonous stuff like monitors; if we all still want that tab 😁

Am386DX-40 was released in 1992, so it can not appear in 1987.

The Intel 386-16 appeared first in 1986 in the Compaq DeskPro 386 system.
Probably the high-end CPU in 1982 was the Intel 80286-12.

Also Gravis Ultrasound was released in SB Pro time, before the SB16 appeared.

The 3dfx cards are 3d accelerators only and have no 2d portion like a regular video card.

Video Card Suggestion for:
1992 Number Nine GXiTC.
1993 SPEA Mercury Pro (S3 Vision928 4 MB VRAM)
1994 Diamond Stealth 64 Video VRAM VLB 4 MB
1995 ELSA Winner 2000PRO-PCI-8, S3 VirGE (if it is for 3D)
1996 miro CRYSTAL VRX or Diamond Fire GL 1000 (if it is for 3D)

Thank you. I had bad info that I forgot to update on the 386. 🙁 Deleted for now. Anyone can update if they have accurate info.

Could you buy a 386DX-16 in 1985? Apparently it was released in October of 85.

I guess theoretical yes, however what use would it be without chipset and motherboard?

Also the DX naming was introduced later, as well as the double sigma / 16 bit S/W only and IV marking.
If you go for specific points in time these differences matter.
