Whats the most you've paid for retro tech you had to have compared to how much it was actually worth? Maybe a particular motherboard, case, or video card? So far I'd say for me that was either a Voodoo5 for $150 or Tualatin compatible motherboard for $100. Right now I'm trying to decide if should pay over 100USD for a really nice NOS AT case.

~$90 for a Voodoo2 SLI set, half of which was with money from a trade. Worth it without a doubt for all the entertainment I've derived from it so far, (worth it for the Unreal engine games alone!) and because I know in the pit in my stomach that they're just gonna keep going up in price so I grabbed a set while I could still afford it.

The only other retro thing (non x86) that I've paid more for was a large C64 lot for $100 a few years back and another $70 for repairs when the machine didn't work due to toasted RAM chips. Had to send it to someone as I didn't have a soldering iron back then.

$50 for a Socket 4 motherboard and another $25 for a Pentium 60 from a gold scrapper. The gold scrapper was great, messaged him about handpicking one with good pins and he did so, even asking me if a certain stepping was acceptable. Only had to slightly adjust 2 pins when it arrived and it was even well packed 😁

Retro hardware is surprisingly cheap in Russia.

Which makes sense considering how much retro hardware I see on eBay being sold from Russia. I only wish shipping wasn't so much.

That's a good one.

Hmmmm. I paid overwhelming prices for a couple of things computer-related.
Here's the sound card list that's a testament to my weeping wallet.

Top 5 :
106€ for an AdLib Multimedia ASC 32/64, no box, no drivers.
168$ for two Covox Speech Thing, no box.
198€ for a Roland SCC-1, no box, no software.
380$ for an AdLib Gold, complete in box.
492$ for an IBM PC Music Feature, no box, no drivers.

And here are some expensive things, that today would be even more since the retro-market has changed so much.
Oddities :
120$ for a CT1330 SB Pro 1, no box, no software.
150$ for a Gravis Ultrasound 2.1, no box.
156€ for a SB16 + Waveblaster 1, no box.
159$ for an AdLib, in box.
265$ for a LAPC-I new in box.

The more sound cards, the better.

$US255 inc postage to Australia for a 3dfx Voodoo 5 5500 AGP 4x Rev.A2 3500 Pre-Production Prototype.

Also $AU1600 for about 20 SGI workstations. Half of that cost was just postage from Melbourne to Sydney!!

I do remember having (slightly) overpayed for a Voodoo 5 (close to €100?) which was years ago. And why? I just had to have one 😵

I may have paid more for large lots, but in such cases the individual parts were probably a good deal anyway.

US $500 for a single (single, not a pair) JBL 4410 loudspeaker. I need it as center speaker for my JBL 120Ti mains tho.

As a rule, I try to stay away from any computer or piece of hardware that costs more than 25 USD. The only exception was the recent DreamBlaster X2+S1 Black Friday bundle for 97.5 EUR + shipping.

Funnily enough, I ordered that bundle because I couldn't get a decent MIDI device for a decent price, but once I paid for the DreamBlaster I immediately found a Yamaha SW60XG for 9 bucks. Guess as soon as I shell out 150 bucks for an MT-32 I'll find something compatible for 5 bucks or something 🤣

Like jheronimus, my most expensive single purchase was the DreamBlaster X2. Close to $100 US with insured shipping to the states. After that, it was $40 for a 486 VLB motherboard, which included a DX2-66 and 4MB. Then after that, a bunch of purchases between $7 and $25, mostly PCI video cards.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

CM-32L was around 130-140€ (shipping+tax) even though the price itself was around 70-80€. Not too bad, but I try to stay away from things that cost more than 100€ in all. Then again, you only need to buy those expensive things once and they serve you for years.

Interesting topic... the most expensive piece for each category:
Many of these things were bought quite some time ago, hence the low price. 😀

3dfx V5 5500 PCI = $100
ATi Radeon HD 4890 = $40
Nvidia Quadro FX 4600 = $57
Matrox Parhelia AGP 8x: $23
Asus PCH-DL: $77
Intel Pentium Pro 200/1M: $29
AMD K6-III+ 400: $21
Creative SB32 CT3620: $19

Maybe not quite fulfilling the 'compared to how much it was actually worth' part, but...

USD $500* for a sealed(!) new in box 21 inch CRT monitor (manufactured in August 2006)

(*: the going retail price at the time...)

For me it sort of depends on how you define "worth".

The value of that 21" CRT was really good as you have had much use of it but today we find them in dumpsters.

My Pioneer SX-1250 could be said to be worth little to me as I have other amps I can and do use that in real life sound just as good (and measure even better) so I don't really need it. On the other hand the Pioneer SX-1250 will only gain in monetary value as it gets harder and harder to find one in mint condition and I really wanted it.
