Saw this at BoingBoing today.

Verschlimmbessern (German): To accidentally make something worse in the process of attempting to mend or improve it. Multiple applications around computers, cake baking and relationships.

See the second image from the bottom.

I've twice committed Verschlimmbessern on hard drives. Once, I was sliding a 3.5 drive into an anti-static bag, and the bag pinched closed. I let go of the drive, thinking it would fall into the bag, but instead it dropped onto hard ground. 😵 The other time, I moved a hard drive from one system to another to scan it for bad sectors. While pushing the SATA power connector on, somehow the entire thing broke off of the HDD PCB. Needless to say, I couldn't tell if there were any bad sectors after that. 🤣.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

In 2006, a Serbian man named Zeljko Tupic was rushed to the hospital after he inserted a pencil through his penis hole to improve his erection. Apparently the plan backfired when the pencil shifted during sex and became lodged in his bladder. Does it count as "Verschlimmbessern"?

(Not to mention the amount of pain he had to endure while inserting the said pencil through the penis hole. I don't know, perhaps pain is artistic to some people.)

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

Well...I pictured it in my mind, thanks man 😒

I had a 6800GT fully working, took the cooler, was quite dirty, put it back again - artefacts! 🙁
Same goes with the Radeon X700 Pro. 🙁
I won't take any more coolers off GPUs ever again, even if it's dirty as a hooker.

Viagra requires a prescription and is expensive. This dude obviously had the brilliant idea to cut the costs at a very sensitive spot... 😀

Verschlimmbessern is indeed a very nice word. It is not used very often in Germany anymore.
Another nice word is the neologism "Jein", which consists of Ja=yes and Nein=no. A total contradiction in just four letters. Fantastic. People hate this answer to death, as Germans prefer binding statements whichy one can rely on.

All I have in mind is that annoying trend of skinned apps beginning in 2000 whether they really needed those skins or not. ZoneAlarm, Neoplanet, Viruscan, etc... this got worse post-XP when all of a sudden they're trying to be their own Luna-derived window style and InstallShield had to join in on the unneccessary skin train with oversized tracky installer windows trying to clone the XP setup process.

"skins oh thats not a bad thing!!! better grafik" It's really bad when they don't respect your font color choices so if you use a lighter text color on a dark background sometimes these forced skins will cause unreadability. That's still a problem today beyond skinned apps (like websites)

Mmmhhh... InstallShield 9...

I hated those InstallShield 5.x versions on early Win9x machines to death. They ran quickly to 99% during initialization and needed forever to complete...

ZoneAlarm, Neoplanet, Viruscan, etc...

...Spotify, Chrome, Firefox, Office. Newer applications are less obvious offenders, but rendering custom UI controls (often to emulate the look of a specific setup) instead of just using the OS defaults is still a surprisingly common practice. Spotify, Firefox, and Office are particularly bad offenders, since Spotify blatantly emulates whatever Windows is the most recent, Firefox looks, feels, and acts like it was written for Mac OS, and Office takes on whatever graphical form was popular at the time... forever.

Edit: I just remembered that AMD's Ryzen overclocking utility and Radeon settings applications are also clearly skinned for Windows 10. How dated are they going to look 10 years down the line?

Haha, reminds me of "Denglisch". Partly Deutsch (=German) / partly English! 🤣
