Hi all,

My main Windows 10 PC refuses to stay asleep for more than 2-3 minutes. After that it wakes up. I did my share of google-age and could not find anything. Most advice seems to be for pre-Win10 and the settings are quite different.

Is there any way to see what event wakes up the machine?

Any other advice is appreciated too.

Event Viewer :B

It'll be in the Windows Administrative Tools folder in your Start Menu/Screen. Then, navigate to the "Windows Logs" and "System" to find system events, which will include sleep/wake events which should tell you the general reason why the system went to sleep or woke up, as there could be a number of reasons why the computer won't stay asleep. For me, a few months ago I noticed Avast was constantly bringing my computer out of sleep to do scheduled scans... but then wouldn't start the scan, so the system would go back to sleep... then wake up again and not do a scan, then go back to sleep... I ended up having to disable weekly scans, which isn't a big deal really, but still. :P

Also, if the cause is anything USB then it's likely something you have plugged into a USB port which is changing state, OR, something only loosely plugged in which is triggering random disconnects and reconnects.

Lastly, if the cause is network related, just configure the system to not wake from network events, which is either a power management setting or burried somewhere in the main system settings.

Vault 7 rootkit (aka Windows 10) spying on you would be my guess..

So, another Windows 10-related problem.

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

So I did clear my event log, then put PC to sleep. Sure enough it woke up in 2-3 minutes. When I looked at the log all I could see "Computer coming out of sleep" kernel event with no explanation or reason given 🙁

The issue is easily fixed by installing Windows 7.. 😜

On a more serious note, could it be getting awakened by a LAN event? Try disabling Wake on LAN in BIOS or disabling all LAN/WLAN cards in device manager to see if that helps?

Open device manager, find your Ethernet card and open its properties.
There on the power management tab disable "allow this device to resume your computer" (or something like that, I don't have english version of Windows at hand).

This reduced for me unwanted wake ups to about once a day. Still annoying, but manageable.

That was it! After doing that now it stays asleep. Thank you!

Just for future reference, in case someone else encounters this problem. You can open a command window in administrator mode and type the command "powercfg -lastwake". It will show you the device that last woke up the computer from sleep.
